Pitt
Duquesne
Wright State
U of Indiana - Bloomington
Marquette
U of Wisconsin - Madison
Western Michigan
U of Michigan ( third visit - hey - it’s my alma mater )

We have time for one more school on the way home. I know a little bit about all of them, but not enough to make any sort of decision.

If you were me, would you make the final stop in Ohio at: U of Toldeo, Akron, BGSU, Ohio U or would you choose to visit Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA?

Not too worried about the ‘stats’ of each place. Step-D is a good student and should be able to get into any of the above.

Mercyhurst is the only one of your last set I’ve been to, and it is not a place I would rush to visit again. It fits pretty poorly with the rest of the schools you are visiting in terms of size, focus, and impressiveness, and it’s probably way out of your way, too.

Thanks JHS - Unless others sing Mercyhurst’s praises, or I find out something incredible about the program there, it’s off the list. You are right, it’s somewhat our of our way.

Erin’s Dad - good to know. I’ve attended some hockey games there, but really don’t know much about the campus or the school as a whole.

Pretty good list, I am a fan of Miami OH though I am from Michigan. Definitely check out GVSU, it might be a better choice to visit rather than say WMU. Also, if your daughter has a 3.5 GPA and a 26 ACT then she would get in state tuition plus $1500 a year at GV. Keep in mind GVSU’s athletic training program is pretty good since GVSU is a big health sciences college.

Another school to put on your radar would be U-WI-LaCrosse. I don’t know if the school would be too small given your list but it has one of the best Athletic Training/Physical Therapy departments in the midwest. The AT/PT dual will make her highly employable, although PT programs are moving toward the PhD level (which she could get at LaCrosse).

I’ll second the notion that Ohio University is a pleasant place to go to college, with an attractive campus. I’ve never been to Erie, but the area does not have a good reputation.

gvnee89 - Thanks for the info! I looked into GVSU and while it does look like a very impressive school, The 60-40 split females to males is kind of giving me pause. As is the major lack of diversity (as reported by current students.) It’s the most out of our way (besides Mercyhurst which is now off of the list.) I will have to think and research more about this option!

SteveMA - I hadn’t realized that UW-Lacrosse had such a good/forward thinking program! We aren’t going that far West in this trip, but as a MN native, I’m sure we can find a reason to sneak in a visit if Step-D wants to visit at a later time. Thanks so much for the info!

RMGsmom- Yes, I have heard that as well. Definitely leaning towards Ohio U based on everything I know about it. Thanks for the recommendation!

charlieschm - Thanks much. I’m going to take Mercyhurst off of the list. Erie would be out of our way, and I’m not really getting overwhelming positive response about stopping to visit. OU is really intriguing!

laurendog–if you are in MN-Gustavus would be another excellent choice for Athletic Training. They have one of the oldest, most established programs in the state.

here’s another vote for Ohio U, worth a look, I thought it was a lovely campus & I think its ‘party’ reputation is rather overblown (no more of a party school than any state U, they just have a big blow-out halloween party that puts them on the party map).

I know several people who are there/went there and all liked or loved it! Some of them were top of their class and went b/c of great merit.

SteveMA - Wow. You know my mom’s best friend is a professor at GAC and I never knew that about them. Know St. Peter like the back of my hand. Know it’s not at all for DD. But, thanks for telling me something new about a place I’ve known for years and years. Amazing!

paperplane - Ohio U is gaining momentum in this thread! The “party school” rep does make me a bit nervous, but if I’m going to let her look at UW-Madison, then I shouldn’t shy away from Ohio U!

ohiobassmom- Thanks so much. Adrian is a nice part of Michigan and I didn’t realize they had the ‘direct entry’ Master’s Program. She’s looked at Seton Hall (much the same BA/BS to MS system there) and loved it - so maybe Adrian is worth a look. Thanks for the help!

We visited Adrian last weekend, they’ve given S a really fantastic package. The school is what I’d call up and coming…increased from 900 kids to 1700 in the past few years, lots of building and renovating going on, and lots of $ to entice the students they want due to their own endowment and a very large gift this year. The difference between old and new there is striking.

It’s still known as a big sports school - so exercise med being strong there may make sense - but they’re turning the ship to increase straight up academics and the arts now as well. S is seriously considering it.

PS: From your list I’d choose OU also. Mainly because I like Athens :). But OU is in a bit of a fiscal crisis, the newspapers have said, and the “physical plant” is crumbling a bit. Don’t know where they are with that now.

Thank you for all of the feedback! I really do appreciate your comments.

Looking carefully at our route and thinking about Kent State instead of Ohio U. Kent State is much more ~on the way~ home and would really cut down on our driving.
