Ok, I want to get into SCS. And I know that if I do, I’ll have little problem finding a well paid job somewhere. Unfortunately, getting into SCS is hard. Even if I don’t get in, however, I rather like CMU in general and would still be interested in going there, especially if I can double major.

But CMU is rather expensive. Additionally, my next choice after CS is Anthropology, or something of that sort–a field that I can’t see paying well regardless of degree. That said, is it worth trying for CMU even for HSS Anthro, despite the rather large cost and less than wonderful financial aid rating? I know that I can double major, but I don’t know if I’d do well at it; I imagine CS doesn’t have too many courses in common with Anthro…

CS is very different from Anthro. Can you maybe tell me why you want to do Anthro or maybe other choices you would consider like ECE, Engineering, Concept Math, Computational Finance, etc?

Anthro simply because I enjoy the subject matter. Sadly, books about CS often aren’t the most interesting. Or rather, the local public library doesn’t have the interesting ones. History sector humanities (rather, anything not English language/literature) are quite well-represented. Of those, I just like Anthro-based books.

Oddly enough, I don’t have any interest in other sorts of applied science/math fields. Go figure.

So, even if double majoring is a dead shot, more or less, what are the general salaries for Anthro majors? (Heck, I’m not even sure what they do for a living. Research is all I can think of.)

Anthro salaries are never going to be high unless you are at an upper Ivy or something. I’m pretty anti-drama/arts since I believe you should be doing something marketable with all that CMU offers instead of something that should be more of a “hobby”. If you really want to do anthro I would either go to 1. An Ivy or 2. The cheapest state school you can find.
