I try to stay current although I’m not sure I can say I’m overly trendy so my first thought in reading the original post was, NO, don’t tell me infinity scarves are headed out! I have a few and love them. I don’t have any really bulky ones though. Have never been a big fan of the waterfall sweaters or anything that has a significant hem length difference between the front and the back. I didn’t really ‘get’ the high low trend. I did buy one cold shoulder top to test and got lots of compliments and now own two. Don’t wear them too often but they do look good; won’t have a problem when they go out of style though. I can’t get used to the bell sleeves because they seem so impractical. I’m sure I’d drape the bell through my food at every opportunity.
With regard to trends, I’m wondering if skinny jeans are headed out and, if so, what’s coming in.
I do agree with the sentiment that, really, we should wear what we feel good in and like.
I like fashion, but it is really my sister who always looks really good, and very classy.A few things I have learned from her:
Stick to a limited palette. She (and I) wear a lot of neutrals (black and grey) and then a limited amount of color in a flattering shade and a very limited amount of pattern.
Incorporate trends, but not anything extreme and combine the trendy items with classic pieces.
Don’t wear things that don’t flatter you or that make you feel uncomfortable.
That said I would keep the cardigan and scarves if they work with the rest of your wardrobe. I might choose a trendier top such as a bell sleeve top but one with modestly wide bells and in a classic color (black or other neutral).
I’m not really a scarf person, I don’t like things around my neck. I’m okay with the bell sleeves on certain things and certain people. I don’t care for the cold shoulder look, though I own one dress with it…lol
Ditch the infinity scarf, ditch the waterfall cardigan. I’m no fashion plate, I stick to classic cuts, colors and styles. If I buy something trendy, it isn’t with the intention to wear it for many years.
Yesterday at brunch, a woman I hadn’t seen in 20 years had on loose black wool pants, light weight cashmere short sleeved mock turtle neck sweater of deepest charcoal, black flats with trouser socks or tights, handmade ikat scarf she probably bought on her travels or inherited from her mother, large one-of-a-kind artist made cuff bracelets in mixed metals. When I last saw her, she had on the same outfit, not the exact pieces but black pants, sweater, scarf, flats, wide cuff bracelets. She looked fabulous yesterday and 20 years ago. The only difference yesterday was ginormous and gorgeous baroque pearl drop earrings, which I’m sure are her everyday earrings these days. This is a look that really works for her. Another woman at the brunch had on a silk wrap dress. She has been wearing that style dress as long as I’ve known her, maybe 17 years. I love her look as well.
Waterfall cardigans, infinity scarves, etc may go in and out of fashion - but if it’s your look, I say embrace it and make it your own- Don’t be quick to discard what works. jmho
“Question, is fashionistas interest based on locality ? For example, Paris vs Chamonix?”
Precisely. I have certain clothes that I wear in Asia. Learned this the hard way by arriving once with perfectly acceptable US fashions (classic, not “fashionista” trends). As a classic, neutral color dresser, I do not feel out of place often, but that trip, I quickly decided I would make some special purchases for the occasions at this destination.
I have no problem with those who hold fashionista ideals. At a younger point in my life, I probably would have been well aware of the trends. But, I must say it is a relief to me to be at a stage in my life when I feel that my clothing choices do not have to be dictated by whatever is trendy. Now, I’m satisfied when I have some notion of hem lengths and pant widths and feel I’m generally in line!
I have gone to the malls a few times in the last few weeks. The bell sleeves are EVERYWHERE. I can see having one I guess, but not more than that. Hard to find anything new and cute that doesn’t have them.
Not a fashionista, so I can’t give much advice. I generally do not buy anything that is “trendy” unless I feel that it has staying power and/or is practical. I am scarred for life by the eighties fashion. I might add an item or two from the trendy list but only if they are good quality and made from comfy fabrics, like the jumpsuit by DVF that I have worn several times - people think it is a pantsuit. I bought one cold shoulder dress - back in 2013 or so… only because Mr. thought it was cute on me, wore it once, and donated. Bell sleeves work well if they do not get in your plate during dinner - othewise, it is a pita.
I think skinny jeans are here to stay because they are practical. It is hard to tuck regular jeans into tall boots.
I hope I’m not rubbing people the wrong way by using the term fashionista. But it’s easy and identifiable, I think. One doesn’t have to follow trends to be a classic, smart and lovely dresser. My closet is full of classic clothing. But I like trendy clothes, too. I never buy too much each season, as I know they have a life expectancy. But I do enjoy it. So my question wasn’t meant to be offensive to those who don’t enjoy the trendy shopping. It was just a question for like minded shoppers.
I would love to see skinny jeans go out if style and eventually they will…but they are still quite strong. I love bootcuts, much nicer with my hips and shorter legs. But I do enjoy showing off my boots and booties with the skinnies. I was never so happy when the low risers were out. What an awful look.
I admit it, I like to dress trendy. I like to see what the fashion bloggers are wearing.
I used to dress much more classic (preppy). That’s how my sister dresses. It’s great, I love it. My sil is pretty trendy, I love that also. But these days, trendy is it. It’s what I want to do. No one says boo, except to copy what I wear at times. It’s all good.
Today I have on a peasant top with skinny jeans, lightly distressed. I’ll probably put on my Birkenstocks when we go to dinner. I’m comfortable and happy.
Oh no, no offenses here! I just don’t do trendy, so no opinion on waterfall cardis or infinity scarves. I look for staying power, and IMO, skinny jeans have that in them because they are practical. The style will continue to evolve (low waist v high waist, etc.) but the fact that they are tall boot-friendly means they will be here to some degree or another.
I don’t think anyone was offended. I just think there are some of us who are not “fashionistas” who wanted to give our opinions, but we had to state that disclaimer because you wanted opinions from “like minded” people.
As for the boots and booties…I have always been a Woolrich and LLBean type of gal, but my youngest daughter is a trendy dresser and wears skinnies and boots. She needed a pair of brown ankle boots for some reason a couple of weeks ago, and I dug into my bin of old shoes, and found a pair (sort of dressy chukka-ish) that were acceptable to her.
So on Friday, she came home wearing them for the second time. I asked her if she’d gotten any complements on them, and she said “Oh, yeah, lots!” I asked her if she told her friends that they were my old boots and she said, “Yeah, I told them that these boots were older than me!” Now I wish I had saved more of my good quality items I have donated over the years.
I wasn’t offended but must confess to having a smidgen of hurt feelings since, even though I like to think I know what’s going on, it was necessary to Google to see what a waterfall cardigan looked like.
I took a pass at cold shoulders and I will probably pass on bell sleeves. I plan on wearing my waterfall sweaters as it is s nice change from the cardigan pencil skirt look for the office. I tend to wear classics. I don’t have an infinity scarf but will probably wear my scarves sometimes when the mood strikes. I did buy this fabulous cozy duster sweater a few years ago but rarely wore since it was unusual and I had not seen any…this year they are everywhere so it will probably leave the house more often. That, a great scarf and narrow leg jeans and a turtleneck will solve a lot of weekend situations.
No offense anyone…I know birkenstocks are comfy for some…but I don’t include them in my version of “fashionista”
At all. I think they are useful…but not exactly trendy. Or fashionable.
