Fact that Kanye has 57 Grammy nominations in his 10 year career tells me there are way too many categories.
Kanye and Taylor Swift seem to have so much in common after all. Haters gonna hate (hate, hate, hate hate).
Count me in as another who finds nothing appealing about Kanye. Nothing.
I haven’t seen any mention on this thread about Kristen Wiig dancing in the Sia performance. At first I though it just looked like her, but apparently it WAS her. I had the chorus of Chandelier running through my head all day yesterday.
^^^ Yes, that was her and the younger dancer was Maddy from Dance Moms. That whole scenario creeps me out.
Regarding Kanye - people of all ages like people, follow them and support them for many reasons. Maybe because they like his music, like his style, like the way he looks - whatever. We can all probably attest to “liking” someone not for their main “talent” but for something about them. Clearly, he appeals to many on some level. My kids like his music, but don’t like his person.
I never watched Dance Moms so didn’t know who she was. When I saw Sia on the list of nominees I google the video and was blown away by what an amazing dancer Maddy is.
I don’t find anything appealing about an arrogant narcissist, who is also a selfish, inconsiderate jerk…who doesn’t even sound very good. But then again, I guess people have different tastes in what they admire. But Taylor, as annoying as she can be, has many good qualities. I don’t think there’s any comparison to Kanye.
“Kanye and Taylor Swift seem to have so much in common after all. Haters gonna hate (hate, hate, hate hate).”
I think there’s no comparison. Taylor Swift appears to have musical talent and a pleasant-enough public persona. She doesn’t try to be obnoxious.

Kim Kardashian appeals to many people do, as does Paris Hilton. That doesn’t stop me from thinking that they are generally talentless and not worth my brain space.
The only song I’m aware of that Kanye did that was worth listening to was “Gold Digger” as part of the Ray Charles movie (and even so, really - you could have cleaned up a few words and not lost anything). The rest of it falls into that category of trashy, vulgar music that isn’t worth listening to, IMO. No musicality or depth whatsoever. Even on that show, you saw Stevie Wonder, John Legend and Pharrell Williams – all of whom have far more musicality to their work, IMO.
And yes, kids, get offa my lawn :-).
Wow, some of you are a rough crowd. You don’t like Kanye - don’t let him take up your “brain space” but really, can you practice some restraint on your wording of them or their fans??? Music among other things is a personal choice based on personal taste/reasons - listen to who you like, don’t support who you don’t. But the word abuse is really not becoming!!!
I don’t particularly care for Beck, either.
The difference is a) Beck has real musical talent (even if it’s not my particular taste, I can acknowledge the talent) and b) I don’t see Beck grabbing microphones or pontificating as to who should have won awards or just generally acting in a classless fashion.
And I do think much (not all) of today’s rap and hip-hop is vulgar and has no musical depth behind it. And I’m by no means a prude.
I always thought watching awards show was like shaving with mace in the dark.
I don’t think much of “musicians” who use auto tune.
If you don’t like the way you sound, take some voice lessons.
Just read that Kayne has 21 Grammy awards.
The Beatles have 10.
People will still be remembering and talking about the Beatles 50 years from now in how they revolutionized music, changed popular culture. Kanye is a trashy flash in the pan. I can only take comfort that he’s a tiny footnote in musical history. At the Grammys, they did some sort of Stevie Wonder lifetime tribute, which of course is fully deserved. Do you think 30 years from now, they’ll be giving Kanye lifetime achievement awards? Hardly.
I don’t like Kanye West as a person, but musically it’s crazy not to think he’s been incredibly influential both as a producer and with his own albums. He might not get a lifetime achievement award if he keeps on acting up at the Grammy’s, but if he learns to grow up, it wouldn’t surprise me at all. (And I actually do think he was correct that some of the winners he objected to were incredibly insipid.)
Kanye is not a flash in the pan. That’s silly. Trashy is in the eye of the beholder, I suppose.
ETA: PG, the song you referenced as liking earlier, Gold Digger, hit no. 1 in 2005. That’s 10 years ago. Hardly a flash in the pan. That probably is my favorite Kanye song.
Kanye has been “influential” in what ways? I seriously don’t get it.
