Don’t be offended, but I don’t really know much about Princeton, I applied to H and Y, and very few people apply to the Ivies in my school. However, there is one really, really annoying guy in my class whose dad went to Princeton and has told everyone and his dog that he applied to Princeton. In addition to being annoying, he doesn’t really do all that well in school, but I guess his SATs could be amazing, though he wasn’t a NMSF. So here’s the rub:

He came to class the other day and said that he messed up and only took 2 SAT Subject tests, so Princeton had to dismiss his application. He said that was unfortunate because he got a call from Princeton admissions and they were going to “pay to fly him out to New Jersey and personally interview on campus” because they thought he was a perfect fit.

Now I’m not stupid, but the whole school is talking about how they wanted to fly him up east for an interview, and people are asking me if H and Y did the same for me. I’m our val, NMF, all-campus club girl, so I feel incredibly stupid when I say “no, they didn’t.” I kinda want to add “NOBODY DOES THAT! He has to be lying and thinking no one knows the difference!” but I’d feel guilty. I just want to check, though, Princeton doesn’t really do that, do they?

Yeah, umm, even if Princeton did do stuff like flying people up to NJ to interview them on campus, they wouldn’t have called him before noticing that he neglected to follow the REALLY simple directions and perform the task of taking 3 subject tests, since your SAT information is processed by non-committee members (like, someone types it up or something and puts it all in the same format or something). So yeah…TOTAL lie.

The only time colleges ever fly kids out is when the student in question is a highly recruited athlete. Don’t worry…that’s total bull. Good luck with H and Y!!!

princeton has to handle tens of thousands of applications. imagine flying in every kid that the ad coms thought was a ‘perfect fit’. That guy in your class is probably lying through his teeth.

I would not pay any attention to him at all. It is ridiculous. Princeton does not even put that much weight on the interview. There would be absolutely no reason for them to fly him up to have an interview. If they thought he was so amazing they would have just accepted him, and after the acceptance invited him up to meet with faculty, administration ect to try to get him to com or put a personal note in his acceptance, or send a likely letter even if they dont usually do so. Princeton doe snot need to fly any one up for a personal interview. The fact is that either this guy is not intelligent enough to realize that Princeton needs three subject tests and has been notified his application must be dismissed, or he realizes he is not compelling enough and is trying to bow out now. The thing is that he seems so arrogant that he heeds to make sure everyone thinks that Princeton wanted him.

Thank you everyone! Mallomar: I care because I live in a small town where information spreds like wildfire, and I had been asked about a dozen times in one day about my “interview.” I was definitely not going to call him out on it (like jon314 said about lowering to levels) but I just wanted to be sure and receive an informed response. Again, thanks everybody, and good luck with Princeton–may y’all turn out to be the real perfect fits!

School don’t fly kids out to interview them. They fly them out to visit after they’ve been accepted. And that’s only if the kid’s family is really really poor and can’t afford to visit. Since this guy’s dad went to Princeton, he’s probably not THAT poor.

Also, if they already thought he was a perfect fit, why bother flying him out to interview? Even if he were too far away from any interviewer, someone could always phone-interview him.
