Okay confused! Who's smart here?

It turns out that the scholarship I need doesn’t look at the writing portion of the SAT score… what does this mean? Only the math and all of those reading, grammar, and vocabulary questions? Everything except the essay?

Also, is it harder to achieve to a 1450 this way? Oh man. I’m toast! A 1450 out of 1600… I only got 173 on my PSAT! And I’m only in Algebra II!

Help!

Yes to all the above. Sorry.

^^^ditto…

Perhaps you could look for a scholarship with lower standards…just a suggestion. Afterall, money is money…

No, no. I’ve got my heart set.

Nothing is impossible, impossible is nothing, right? As long as anybody with relative intelligence puts their head to it, they can achieve a great score, right?

“Only the math and all of those reading, grammar, and vocabulary questions? Everything except the essay?”

No, the writing section includes the essay AND the grammar questions, so neither of these would count. The vocab, reading comprehension, and math questions are what would count.

That’s awful! The grammar section is the one that I am exceptionally good at! I’m awful at vocab and math.

Alright well, I can always improve.

If you’re awful at vocabulary and math, why do you think you deserve a scholarship?

I’m sorry, but that mode of thought is pure pipedream with little basis in reality. Just study and try your best and see what you get.

BigIs, it’s actually a long story.

However, I’m an extremelly devoted worker. I had a really rough time in the beginning of high school and didn’t get much out of school. I failed 90% of my junior high classes and carried some of that attitude into highschool. I was able to completely turn that around and now I have been getting a steady 4.0 for a couple years and I am gaining back intelligence. I have perseverance. I think I deserve to go to this school, and I cannot afford it.

I really do think that I deserve the scholarship.

I really hate to break it to you, but the SAT, especially the math & reading sections, is primarily an innate ability test. If you “suck” at reading and math, then it will require an extraordinary amount of diligence to compensate – and you will probabably not perform as well as those with the intrinsic aptitude for the subjects.

Well, perhaps I don’t suck. It’s just that, I come here and see that people have got 230 on their PSATs and 2300’s on their SATs and it makes me feel as if I “suck”.

I am above average in everything I do, test taking, grades, academics in general.

I don’t know where to place myself on the academic spectrum. But I do have low self confidence in my academic ability, and therefore I feel as if I am not good enough to get the score I need.

I suppose I will get a better idea of how I am doing when I get my scores back tomorrow.

saying that the sat is an “innate ability test” is not true at all. anyone can improve their scores if they really tried. i, myself, was not a spectacular sat-taker, but with some devotion to loads of practice, now im “up-there”.
Katcarp2, you can do it.

Krapde, whoever you are, you are naturally inspirational. :P

Finally somebody with something positive to say. Thank you. You actual put a smile on my face.

I suppose I can do it. :)

Don’t listen to whatever anyone is saying, Kat. You CAN get an amazing score on the SAT just from studying. You just have to practice practice practice. Seriously, if you practice enough you can make a pretty good score. It’s not a
“pipe dream.” You’ll just have to focus and work hard. Good luck :)

If you work hard, you really can do anything. The important thing is not to give up. It’s also important to remember that this one scholarship is not your only chance. There are many scholarships out there and many schools. Don’t rest all your hopes on just this one.
I’m not saying you can’t do it, but what I am saying is you have to keep reaching, keep trying, whether this scholarship works out or not.

Thirded - don’t let people tell you that you can’t do something. You have a good attitude, and it will take you far in life. Always believe in the power of hard work. Always.

Thanks great guys!

What are your average point gains from the first time you take a test to the next?

Between math and reading (all that they look at) I got a 1150. I only need a 300 point gain.

I certainly wasn’t ready for this SAT, I know I can do it.

If this was your first time taking the SAT, and you’re a junior, you will see an increase if you take them again in the fall as a senior. If you need to take them again this spring, you may not see as big an increase.

Your self assessment that “I suck” at math and English was apparently made without considering the data (academic grades, SAT scores, etc.) and was obviously incorrect.

Let your work speak for you and you’ll do fine.

Sounds like you’re at least 99% of the way there. :)
