Okay, so does SHS really matter?

I’m in the SHS (science honor society) at my school, and I plan on being a neuroscience or molecular bio major when I get to college. But seriously…it’s so much work, and I don’t know if I can handle the SHS anymore. I mean, I don’t even have time, because I’m already in the national honor society and national french honor society and a bunch of other stuff. I know SHS looks good on your college transcript, but if I dropped out, would it really matter…regarding my college transcript?

If it helps at all, NYU is my first choice, and I have a 3.60 GPA. Haven’t taken the SATs yet.

anyone? …

Well, if you’re most interested in science, would it also work to drop out of something else, so you’d have more time to devote to SHS?

We don’t have subject-specific honor societies at my school and I don’t know much about them, but it looks like you have a fairly impressive resume, SHS or not. If you drop it, you’ll be okay.

SHS is a lot of work, and I’d have to drop a lot of stuff to be able to devote time to it. But I have done other stuff related to my major.

what do you do exactly in shs…never heard of it

shs = science honor society. we basically tutor other students who are failing their science classes. Yeah, that’s pretty much it, but we have to devote SO much useless time to tutoring.

honestly, I don’t think it matters. BUTTTT, you should talk to your advisor. Explain that you can only devote, let’s say, 3 hours to tutoring a week…She’ll probably be happier if you do a little rather than none

Honestly? In my opionion, things like NHS, SHS, spanish honor society, french honor society, etc. don’t hold a lot of weight. More often than not, they are just things to pad your resume with since the eligiblity and selectivity varies from school to school. While at your school, SHS is a tremondous amount of effort, at my school, it’s simply a nominal title. Basically, it won’t mean anything on your application unless you write one of your essays on it. Do you plan on writing an essay about tutoring a failing science student or any other aspect of the society? If not, then drop it and pursue more worthy activities. The only reason I would see you continuing this activity is because you have devoted a fair amount of time to it, you seem reasonably passionate about it- as far as work ethic and consistency, and if you can conjure up a good essay based on the merits of your efforts, then by all means, continue it. If not, then choose an activity that would better highlight your academic aspirations because, seriously, SHS does not ‘appear’ prestigious, unique, or outstanding in any way.

Yeah, I’m already in NHS and math honor society, so you’re probably right. I’m going to try my best to get my tutoring done. If not, then whatever.

Don’t worry about it. Focus on your GPA not on your ECs.
