Harvard University announced today that it will auction one guaranteed admissions slot in its class of 2012, with proceeds of the auction going to support the Peyon Fund, which provides scholarships for underpriveleged high school students. Harvard is one of the most difficult schools for college admissions, accepting about 9% of applicants, according to U.S. News and World Reports. Not just anyone can buy an admission, however. The lucky winner will still be required to meet Harvard’s strict requirements for high school curriculum and have an SAT score above the 25th percentile of accepted freshmen applicants (currrently 1400 out of 1600). Furthermore, the winners will have to pay all normal costs of attending the prestigious institution, which are upwards of $46,000 for the 2006-2007 school year. The auction, which will be conducted on Ebay.com , is expected to raise 10 to 20 million dollars based on estimates of “donations” given the university over the last decade by well-healed parents of high school seniors nationwide. The University announced that the bidding will begin on April 1, 2007.
