Can we PLEASE stop making this political?

THis is true, but people who are gang members rarely become productive members of society who raise their children well and successfully.

I assume you mean it’s because he doesn’t watch Fox.

As horrible as this story is, it’s a local crime story until somebody decides to make it national news. I guess it was national news in Australia, for obvious reasons.

I respectfully disagree. I think that when something this awful happens to a citizen visiting from a close ally, it is automatically national news. Just like I think the Natalee Holloway case actually was (inter)national news.

So I have only glanced at the thread…

They shot this innocent man.
They should go to jail for the rest of their lives.

Jail should be a miserable place to go . No TV, no radio, no books, no gyms, no visitors, single cells and disgusting food loafs and water. Just enough to keep you alive.

See how quickly people will stop killing other people.

If there’s a perception this story only made the news on one side of the spectrum, it’s not entirely accurate, since the story made the news to the other end a couple of days ago.

When it’ll find it’s way to the center, that happy place the WH is in, I can’t say.

This case seems to have turned into a Rorschach test.

The press has reported many things incorrectly. LOTS of stories say Jones said in open court “I pulled the trigger.” He actually said “I didn’t pull the trigger.” He was sobbing so it was hard to understand him. If you aren’t sure what he said, don’t report it. How do I know what he said? I read the story in the local paper and this one as well. [Fox & Friends, Daily Caller Falsely Report ?3 Black Teens? Arrested in Chris Lane Murder | Mediaite](Fox & Friends, Daily Caller Falsely Report ‘3 Black Teens’ Arrested in Chris Lane Murder)

Now, that misreporting is causing problems because African-Americans and others who read the stories think "If the white kid admitted he pulled the trigger, why is he charged with a lesser crime? Why is he getting youthful offender status while the black and biracial kids are charged as adults? " The white kid is NOT charged with pulling the trigger and he did NOT admit it. However, literally half the stories out there say he did. Whatever your political point of view, it’s just disgusting that the media gets basic stuff wrong.

BTW, I have a personal rule for reading news stories in cases like this. I concentrate on the local ones or the ones with a real connection which will do more than rewrite the AP wires. I’m impressed by the Duncan Banner; seriously, I think it’s doing a great job of reporting this story. [Teens charged in murder of Australian Chris Lane » Homepage » The Duncan Banner](http://duncanbanner.com/x250195672/Teens-charged-in-murder-of-Australian-Chris-Lane) It’s good, factual accounts of various aspects of the case. (If you look at the link, go to page 2 as well.) The Aussie press is doing a good job reporting this too.

Complying with some code for journalists, the initial stories from the US didn’t mention the race of the defendants. But doing an end run around it, they posted pictures of the alleged perpetrators…and got it wrong. They accidentally–that’s not sarcastic, I think it was accidental–didn’t post a photo of Jones, who is white. Instead they posted 2 of Edwards. I haven’t actually seen any of the media who did this admit it. However, if you read the stories about Edwards’ racial statements on his facebook page, you see the photos and can see for yourself that the alleged photo of Jones in early stories is one of Edwards taken from Edwards’ facebook page–the one with a bandana over his face.

Now, for the folks who insist this was a hate crime…Not only is one of the alleged perpetrators white, the NEXT VICTIM THEY ALLEGEDLY WERE GOING TO KILL WAS AFRICAN-AMERICAN…oh unless we want to “adopt” Bay’s view that he too was adopted. I haven’t seen photos of Christopher Johnson, but his dad, who phoned in the 911 call saying that three boys had threatened his son is African-American. See photo here: [No Cookies | Herald Sun](http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/chilling-911-call-details-final-moments-of-melbourne-baseballer-chris-lane8217s-life/story-fni0fiyv-1226700172461)

Most of the stories say the 3 teens said they killed Lane because they were bored. One of the teens–Jones, the white one–said that. The other two haven’t stated their motive.

Now, Tatin and others want to dump on “single moms.” Two of the three defendants have fathers in the picture. According to the Aussie press, Jones comes from a two parent home. Both of his parents attended the arraignment. Edwards’ father is the custodial parent. Luna had a stepfather who died last year. So, it doesn’t seem as if the absence of father figures in their lives has much to do with this case.

Lergnom has it right in post #199. Consolation has it right in post #201. This is a sad event…made even sadder by the way it has been reported.

I am oh so sorry I started this thread. I honestly never expected it to be so polarizing.

I wasn’t talking about this case in particular. I made it clear that I was talking about gang shootings in my city and the news coverage I read here.

Look, with the illegitimacy rate sky high especially in gang infested neighborhoods, it’s not a stretch to say that most gangbangers have no father in the home.

I understand why this is done, but I do have to wonder if it has begun to backfire. With the availability of internet information about just about everybody, anybody who wants to can find out information about named accused people pretty easily–and then we get a bunch of claims about what journalists are covering up.

It is interesting to see the list of ways these perps are “not like me” that posters are coming up with. I guess it is somehow comforting to some to have perps always be one of “those people” with “those people” being defined as the ways in which they are not like you.

“The president is free to say whatever he wants. That doesn’t always make it political.”
-Exactly, the pres. is absolutely free to say whatever. However, whatever he says, is ALWAYS political, he wants or not to make it political is absolutely IRRELEVANT. It is political fy the nature of pres. position. His palying golf is political, everything tht he does is POLITICAL, the type of food he eats is political.
Whenever pres. opens his mouth and sould out something, this something is political. Yes, he says whatever he wishes, but it has consequences. This way, I actually can say much more as any other insignificant nobody. If he says something, anything at all, it becomes his stand, his ideology. Does my ideology influence anybody? I do not think so, maybe somewhat some members of my family. It is not the case of pres., Jesse, Al sounding out something, not at all.
Race is only something that is used and abused. It is not a central issue at all. The goal is much more significant than the race relationships. Since race is used over and over and over, of course, they all grab at any chance to abuse it, but they do so for a very very sad reason that is not obvious to the majority…

I find this interesting as well. I think it’s a defense mechanism we all have. People of one philosophical stripe will think that these people are mentally sick (unlike me), while people of a different stripe will think that they are moral monsters (unlike me).

When Australians murder foreign nationals in Australia it gets press in Australia. And, zoosermom is correct that these things are international incidents.

[Security warning to Indian students travelling to Australia after ‘racist’ killing and attacks | Mail Online](<a href=“Security warning to Indian students travelling to Australia after 'racist' killing and attacks | Daily Mail Online”>Security warning to Indian students travelling to Australia after 'racist' killing and attacks | Daily Mail Online)

True. But unless you have a cold blooded murderer in your family, they are all unlike us.

But these cases do become ways for pushing various causes whether it’s gun control or education or the breakdown of the family or funding mental health. Whatever your cause, these cases fit the bill.

Can someone summarize what the great debate is here? I don’t want to read the whole thread.

No kidding. We ought to assign numbers to the different agendas so that a poster does not have to spend the time making the full argument but could post “Well, # 6” to which the rejoinder post could be “No, #11.”

Senseless murder of an Australian in an Oklahoma small town. Standard agenda positions on what’s wrong in America today.

poetsheart said, “that some people are pointing out that one of the suspects apparently tweeted something disparaging about white people, even as they themselves often seemed barely capable of containing their hostility for black people.”

I don’t even know what to say to your foolish comments here, it seems you lack the ability to be unbiased. I post a news story showing quotes from a murderer that have relevance in a murder case by showing his mindset, and then I say that it still doesn’t necessarily mean the murder was a hate crime. You can’t find anything that I’ve said on this forum ever that comes anywhere close to what a murderer posted before he killed someone, but you have a problem with my insensitive comments and not his. If anyone’s prejudging here, it’s you against me. I have no hostility towards any race, your allegations are very damning and not even remotely accurate.

Senseless murder of an Australian in an Oklahoma small town.

This is one of the sickest things that I have perhaps ever heard of… I had just read the report and saw a piece on the news earlier this week. There are some calls in Australia for visitors to boycott the U.S. because of our lax gun laws.

Cue “lax gun law” standard positions. NO NEED TO POST THEM.

Hypocrites. Read the link in #213. Australia begged India not to retaliate when Indian nationals were being targeted (allegedly) in Australia.
