Oklahoma teens murder out of boredom

Allegedly three Oklahoma teens who were “bored” decided to kill someone because it would be interesting to watch someone die. Unfortunately, a 22 year old Australian, a student athlete, who was in town to visit his girlfriend’s family, jogged by them. They chose him as a target, followed him and shot him in the back of the heard.

I have read of some deprived crimes, but this is just so sad. The victim was going into his senior year in college.

How can teenagers be that heartless?

According to news sources, the kids shot another victim after killing Lane and one of them bragged about it on facebook.

I was wondering when someone would post this.

In my junior year, I had a classmate who stabbed and dismembered a man for the fun of it. He came to school the next day like nothing happened (I had 1st hour with him). To say it sent a shock through the community would be an understatement. That was the first time we heard of “Thrill Kills” but since then they seem to have gained in popularity. (He’s now back in the news as the ACLU is trying to get rid of life sentences for juvenile lifers- a move I completely disagree with in the case of first degree murder.)

There are some people that just have no regard for human life. I don’t get it- I don’t pretend to. If this story is true, then not only should they (the two charged with 1st degree murder) never be allowed freedom again but whoever owned the gun should be punished as well. JMO.

My heart goes out to his family and friends.

Incomprehensible.

It’s possible/probable that at least one of them is a sociopath. Sociopaths have no conscience and an uncanny talent for persuasion, which could explain how any non sociopath teen could have been drawn into it.

The one who was dancing as he was arrested will haunt my nightmares.

It’s sad they won’t be getting the death penalty. Their existence serves no purpose in this world.

^^^^zooser, is there footage of that or did you read it? Disgusting.

This has happened so many times over the years. The most famous case may be Leopold & Loeb murdering Bobby Franks, which was made into more than one movie, including Rope by Alfred Hitchcock.

ZM, I hadn’t heard that. My stomach revolted a little with that information.

Sickening.

I’m interested in more of the circumstances. The news reports said he was jogging in a fairly well-off area. Its not clear to me what these kids were doing there. Mug shots can be deceptive, but they don’t appear to have been that well-off. I wonder if they went to that area with the idea of doing some harm in the first place. Not that it matters to a victim.

The sociopath angle may be right. Reminds me of the Dartmouth murders book…one of the most unsettling stories I’ve heard.

I wonder if the gun was legal or not.

I read it here

[No Cookies | Herald Sun](http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/three-teens-charged-over-murder-of-melbourne-baseball-player-chris-lane/story-fni0fiyv-1226700172461)

Teenagers and sociopaths aren’t two entirely different species.

15, 16, and 17, from what I read, which would probably mean the gun would only be legal in that it belonged to someone else.

I’m not sure what you mean by this. Could you elaborate?

^^^I wondered the same thing, Romani.

Maybe I: was one, grew up with a bunch, and raised some, but teenagers tend to: have poor impulse control, lie, need stimulation of some sort, be promiscuous, etc., etc., etc.

Maybe it’s just me, romani, but I classify teenagers as “wannabe” sociopaths, with an option to decline.

I interpreted the statement as meaning that teenagers are prone to selfish and short-sighted decision making, not entirely unlike a sociopath.

EDIT: Crossposted with catahoula.

No, I was legitimately wondering- I thought of a few different interpretations. Thank you for that clarification.

I do not classify teenagers that way. I don’t believe for a second that their “default” position is to need to lie, etc.

Should have elaborated on it to begin with, but thanks, Julie.

Not all, not all the time, but enough that “default” position isn’t the standard I feel a need to argue.

Welcome to disagree, romani.

I think the more we as a society “sensationalize” these crimes the more future sociopaths seek their 15 minutes of notoriety.

I vigorously disagree that teenagers=sociopaths. by the time most kids are teens, they have a morality and some self control. my three kids as teens may have made a few poor choices but those never included harming anyone else or lack of empathy. otoh, I know a few sociopaths who as full fledged adults are cruel, manipulative and without any empathy.
