What are the regulations for attaching decorations and other hanging items to the room and suite walls on Old campus?

I recall that it’s pretty lax. You have to return the walls to presentable order upon leaving – that means puttying over holes and covering any newly added color with a white primer (which you can get from Physical Plant).

So, YES, you can paint a mural above your suite’s mantleplace. But you need to paint it over at year’s end.

I don’t really remember anything specific, which I think is indicative of the fact that everyone pretty much ignores them.

In vanderbilt the walls came apart if you tried to pull almost anything off of them. Tape/other adhesives ripped the paint and sometimes part of the sheet rock off. Even the pre-approved hooks that they gave us at move in left holes in the wall, but i think they didn’t charge us for damage because of that. It would be best not to use a lot of adhesives on fragile walls, they could charge you at the end of the year. Be sure to report any pre-existing damage at the beginning of the year, and anything that needs maintenance (holes in window screens, faulty automatic lights, etc.). Push-pins and such are not technically allowed, but i don’t think they’d notice if you only used a few… they really only take a quick survey of the room when you move out, especially since there will probably be people moving into your suite as soon as you move out (people on athletic teams, the symphony orchestra, spring salvage-ers, commencement show staff, YPMB, etc. stay after finals to do various graduation related duties and extracurricular stuff).

The rooms in D’s suite in Lawrance had painted cork-board-like stuff on one wall, so they could use pushpins in that. And the suite was given a couple of packages of that 3M putty which they wanted you to use for posters, etc. I don’t remember D and her roommates having any sort of issues with this when they moved out, and they hung all sorts of things on the walls…

the regulations for attaching things to the OUTSIDE of dorms are much more lax. i would recommend googling “ivy gate christmas lights.”

Ahem. Indeed. Parents, be warned. ;)

Thanks ALL, your info has been very helpful and relieved some of Ds move-in-day anxiety. A little confused about the reference to Christmas decorations …are they allowed/not allowed???

Tututaxi: if you follow elsewhere’s google directions, you’ll see a, ummm, very unique XMas decoration that JE freshmen erected on the Old Campus this last year.

actually, that particular light structure was “erected” by the freshmen of Ezra Stiles. Go Moose!

elsewhen and T26E4, I followed the link and it * more* than answered my Christmas decoration question. :D

Booklady, thanks for the warning. :o
