Old Engineering Joke

What does this engineering joke mean?

“Well, civil engineers build targets and mechanical engineers build weapons.”

Exactly what it says, Civil Engineers will build things like bridges, buildings, and other infastructure while Mechanical Engineers will build the machines that will blow them up, like tanks, guns, jets, bombs, etc. Which one will most likely keep there job in a slow, but green economy though, haha, joke is on the mechanical engineers then, lol.

I guess you missed that part where the economy has hit civil engineers harder than any other engineering specialty right now.

[Construction Jobless Rate Climbs To 19.4% in November | ENR: Engineering News Record | McGraw-Hill Construction](http://enr.ecnext.com/coms2/article_bmwf091204JoblessRates)
19.4% unemployment in construction industry.

Mechanical Engineers build boxs for electrical engineers to use. Aerospace build flying boxes for EE, civil install our air conditioners.

Don’t you mean electricians? ;-)

I dunno, but it may relate to the fact that technology has historically been developed for military purposes and then transfered to industry.

Not only is that grammatically horrendous, it is also spectacularly false in every way imaginable.

Aibarr… its a joke…don’t get so offended

Who’s offended? You just haven’t been around long enough to get used to my dry sense of humor. It’s all good.

"Mechanical Engineers build boxs for electrical engineers to use. Aerospace build flying boxes for EE, civil install our air conditioners. "

And then the CS’s and SE’s get to use the hardware the EEs make and do actually useful work.

Bonehead, all the Civ E’s I know took oil field jobs, which will pay your about 20-30K more in salary than construction if you have a good GPA out of college. Not to mention, when you have connections, your chances of getting laid off are zero. Construction bites.

Also, one oil company just invested 600 million in green energy research. Which is why Civil/Env engineers are pretty well recruited into that particular area. Again, it depends where you live and who you know.

Everybody knows civil engineers are the tops because even God was one:

Electrical Engineer: God must have been an electrical engineer. Look at the human body with its complex nerve sytem with all those synapses, perfectly timed and working in unison.

Mechanical engineer: No, no, God was a definitely a mechanical engineer. Look at all the bones and moving parts that allow such complex movements.

Civil engineer: You are both wrong. God was definitely a civil engineer. Who else would put a hazardous waste pipe in the middle of a recreation area.

So, Forever LSU, you cite anecdotal evidence that you know some CivE’s in oil as the reason why Civil is more stable than Mechanical? I know tons of MEs who went into oil, too, so I would say that at the very least it is AS stable as CivE, then factor in that the rest of the Civils are hurting right now much more than the rest of Mechanicals and your statement doesn’t really make a ton of sense. I never said Civil was bad or impossible to find a job in, only that it is harder hit right now than Mechanical, which is a true story. And don’t give me any of this crap about the automotive industry, because that is probably on the order of 1% of Mechanical Engineers.
