^^ You must be younger than my cohort because in high school they MADE us take showers…boys and girls separate of course, but the phys ed teacher would stand there until everyone was naked under the shower…no excuses allowed. But then we also had gym uniforms in that day…girls and the guys with our names all the way across the back sorta like prison uniforms. Naked is naked…high school gym back then totally cured you of any same sex modesty issues.
Geez, I was never forced to be naked in shower with lots of girls. I would probably have gotten a gym pass if that had been the case. We had the blue uniforms too, atrocious.
I’m sure I sponge bathed. Maybe I brought extra underwear/bras? I absolutely know I was never naked among my peers.
“the phys ed teacher would stand there until everyone was naked under the shower…no excuses allowed”
That’s really creepy. I doubt that, in today’s world, an adult female PE instructor would be allowed to look at underaged naked girls in the shower.
I went to a private high school in the south in the early 1970’s. Maybe the expectations were different for private vs public, and possibly regional as well.
One elementary school I attended, in Phoenix, has us change into jump suits and shower after PE. All together, naked. No big deal. My next school, also in metro Phx, had no locker rooms, no showers. I don’t think we changed clothes.
My local elementary here in Wisconsin, has a pool, and swimming is taught to the K through 2nd graders. They all change together in the locker room as I did as well, being a parent volunteer. They may have showered in their suits after class, can’t remember.
Never “had” to shower after gym class. Ever. I don’t think I ever did. How sweaty could you be, anyway, standing around the outfield or (in my case) being hit early by the dodgeball and gratefully sitting out the rest of the period!
My list of things to do:
- Go "spa-ing" with @oldfort
- Google the verb form of "manscape"
- Play dodgeball with @Pizzagirl and try to get out when she does so I can hang with her on the sidelines because I think she's hilarious
Well, I do think that manscaping is a generational thing, but I’m rather surprised that people have not heard of it. ![]()
Um, no, skieurope, at least at my gym many of the really old dudes (70+) manscape as well. I was really surprised to see that.
Good to know. ![]()
@skieurope, unless one’s H or boyfriend does it how would a woman have heard of it? Honestly, I have never come across that term and I have at least 2 girlfriends that tend to “tell all.” I thought that was reserved to women -never heard of men going down that road.
I am feeling a little old right now.
Timely subject. My AOL feed today had an article about the increase in STDs in women due to over waxing. Turns out that hair serves a purpose.
It’s been covered in various media from Wendy Williams to Vogue to College Confidential. And to be clear, manscaping does not refer to a specific area; it just means shaping/trimming/removing hair in any region. ![]()
Oh O.K. H gets his hair (on his head) cut and that’s it. So that’s all I am familiar with. Guess it’s a trend we missed!
Is the hair dryer to remove all moisture and prevent fungus?
I guess the other reason I’m not particularly weirded out by nakedness is that I’ve been drawing from nude models since I was 13.
Don’t remember showering in junior high and high school gym classes. Can only speak for teen males…we changed in full view into/out of gym outfits. However, the underwear stayed on.
Shower facilities in the junior high and the old building of my HS were such they were unusable since the '80s or possibly earlier and the inertial “tradition” of not showering after gym continued in the new building.
No one ever showered after my HS gym classes. There wasn’t time, and there was no privacy. We had gym suits–stinky green things–that we changed in and out of. No one took off their underwear.
Weird. I went to 2 different middle schools and 2 different high schools - Pennsylvania, Michigan & California. Had to shower after PE at every one of them. Maybe it was an early 70’s thing…
We had to shower after gym class. Everyone saw everything but then our school also had a pool and took swimming lessons every year for 9 weeks until high school. So by then it was no big deal.
Fungus? I could see the feet but there? I didn’t realize that could be a problem…
I graduated from HS in 1971.
I don’t think so.
