Old Rex Harrison Movies

I watched two last night/this morning as I am battling a bug of some sort. Both on TCM.

The first was called “The Rakes Progress” but was re-titled “Notorious Gentleman” for US release. The second was “The Long Dark Hall.”

Both were interesting tales and Rex Harrison did a nice job in each. Lilli Palmer also starred in both. I am a big fan of old black and white movies and these kept me engrossed while I sat around nursing some sort of malady.

TCM tends to repeat movies and I would suggest you watch these if they happen to be on.

Netflix is delivering The Great McGinty today. I’m on a Preston Sturges kick lately.

(That is, a black and white movie, but not one with Rex Harrison in it.)

I liked Rex Harrison in “The Fourposter” about a college professor (or maybe prep school teacher) in tweed sportscoat, elbow patches, bicycling around.

The movie had one set only (a double bed) and tells the story of his marriage from day one.

Every time Rex comes through the bedroom door, he’s a little bit older, and they have various situations; romantic comedy. He WAS good. Was she Lili Palmer also? Not sure.

Hope you soon feel better from “la grippe, la grippe, la post-nasal-drip…” (Guys and Dolls)

Yup, that’s Lilli Palmer in “The Fourposter.” She was such an elegant actress, so adept with a funny line. I loved her in everything.

A Preston Sturges movie with Rex Harrison in it is “Unfaithfully Yours,” about a conductor going insane with jealousy over his wife’s imagined infidelities. It may sound dire, but it’s Sturges, so of course it’s a comedy.

My favorite Rex Harrison performance was in “My Fair Lady,” but he’s great fun always. I loved “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir,” too.

Not that anyone asked, but my favorite Preston Sturges movie is “The Palm Beach Story.” And I LOVE “The Miracle of Morgan Creek.” That is one smartass movie.

If you ever get a chance to see a movie with Kay Kendall in it, you should watch. She was naturally graceful and lovely with a wonderful ability to be funny too. I mention her in this Rex Harrison thread because they were married and was probably the love of his life. She died all too young while they were still together.

Unfaithfully Yours is brilliant. Skip the painful remake with the guy who played “Arthur” and stick to the b&w original. Some of the funniest scenes ever!

I am just the age to have been a bobby soxer fan of his son Noel who was briefly featured on teen mag covers and was the star of a spy show…was he the male interest in Girl from UNCLE…and never forget his Winchester Cathedral…his fame I think was as fleeting as being a preteen.

Rex was diabolical in Midnight Lace, and what a racy title.

speaking of black and white movies I was on a 40s kick for a while
and recommend the Good German with George Clooney & Cate Blanchett

but as far as Rex Harrison goes I have only seen [My Fair Lady](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6iktQ2y1Rs</a>) and the Ghost and Mrs Muir ( because I liked the TV show LOL)

“Midnight Lace” is well worth renting. We actually purchased it for one of my daughters when she was on a Doris Day kick. (Doris Day being, imo, a criminally underrated actress). Said daughter was so freaked out by the spooky opening that she needed another year before she could watch the whole thing.

And let us not forget Anna and the King of Siam, a non-musical, upon which The King and I was based. Harrison certainly gives Yul Brynner a run for his money.

For those interested, here’s his IMDB listing, with all of his films in his various roles as actor, producer, etc.
