Applied 10/16.
OOS for the merit. Need to visit Bama and Mississippi likely end of January.

How competitive is Honors? Does everyone get scholarship money for honors? Lot of work if not getting any more money.

I’m not sure how competitve the honors college is. My understanding is that you have to complete the same application and write the essays to be eligible for competitive scholarships and/or the honors college. S24 has not done this yet. He is not big on essay writing especially the type of prompts that are typicallly required. He is also not really interested in honors college, but more scholarship money would be fantastic. It seems like a lot of the questions on the scholarship application are very similar to what he had to answer for the common application. The University of Alabama did the same thing. This is a huge pet peeve of mine. If you already have those answers from the common app, why does he need to provide them again?

My child got accepted but we didn’t send scores. Has good scores but I knew they weren’t needed for his admission. I started thinking about merit scholarships. Do you think I should send the scores for Merritt consideration? Or do you typically get merit without sending scores?

Also, is there a rush to make a deposit for housing after acceptance (son hasn’t made school decision yet).

It doesn’t seem like it from the information I’ve seen but since we haven’t had a chance to do a tour yet I wasn’t sure if we were missing something and didn’t want to get stuck with no housing option if he ends up wanting to go. Thanks.

I would put down the $100 deposit. My child ended up going elsewhere, but the entering class this year was the largest ever and housing was very difficult to find for some. We did the deposit in Jan and my kid was on the very end of Round 1 of selection. So they would have likely been in a traditional dorm

S24 received acceptance to Sally Barksdale Honors College and it looks like it provides a lot of benefits. Does anyone have any recent experience with the program?

Can you share some of the benefits? Do they offer any additional scholarships for OOS students

The letter mentions the possibility of additional scholarships and the COA for Ole Miss already is low. Honors college says it provides small class options, registration priority, honors advising and housing. It looks like it offers substantial benefits, I just am curious about current student experiences and how they like it. S24 has applied to some other honors colleges as well, but this is the first honors acceptance. He also is considering acceptances at UGA, Clemson, FSU, South Carolina, Auburn, and TCU, and is waiting to hear from 3 more. The Honors College definitely makes Ole Miss a stronger choice and we are trying to learn more.

S24 accepted at Auburn and South Carolina as well and so far, Ole Miss is a bargain just with the merit money he received compared to those two!

We actually got slightly better merit at SC, and Auburn is one of the most expensive options. Still waiting on other HCs and additional merit. Lots to think about but all great schools!

We haven’t gotten merit from SC- his letter said March. We’ll see what happens with that.

Auburn is even more expensive than UGA, which I think is crazy. We got the $11K merit but still it’s pretty expensive for what it is

Agree! I am not as excited about Auburn or Clemson, though S24 hasn’t ruled them out. They are the most expensive and I’m not currently seeing additional value. Even the private school, TCU, is less after scholarships, and it has the benefit of smaller classes, etc. But we are yet to tour any of these schools, so who knows what S will choose?

HELP! Does anyone know where the admissions application number for Ole Miss can be found? My son is trying to complete the special scholarship application and we do not have this number and cannot access the application. Thanks!

Could it be in the first email you received after submitting the initial application?

He applied through the common app. We have been through every email he’s received. The weird thing is we were in the scholarship application before, and I don’t remember having a special application number.

S24 used common app as well and in the email he received confirming receipt he was assigned an app number that he used to log in to check his application status. Can he call admissions tomorrow and ask? I’m sure someone there can help. Good luck. Other thing to try is to go to the website and ā€œcheck application statusā€- maybe the browser stored the application umber?
