Ole Miss vs Bama for Business

Great town - I go for work - either fly KC or Tulsa and drive because xna can be pricey abd I have others to visit. - but I love going there. Well I go to Bentonville but often stay in Springdale or Fayetteville because Bentonville is pricey. I used to drive - and I loved coming up the I49 from Fort Smith…beautiful scenery. The only nice part of the state

Yes, the school is up and coming but the b school is doing great things already given the Wal Mart access/money…and more…and Fashion is big there. People don’t think of Arkansas but many are moving there and housing prices are starting to get…a bit out of whack.

Anyway, was just food for thought for OP given the major.

I added business to the title. OP only had Ole Miss vs Bama. I tried to find major in OP’s previous posts which is where I thought I read fashion. OP replied that it would be business for both of these two schools.

I wish them well - finding the right one for the student. Perhaps both are right.

100% correct.

Many prefer Ole Miss for the Southern feel; U Alabama strives to be non-Southern in some respects.

With respect to majoring in business, look over past internship opportunities & placements.

Have you visited these schools in person? My daughter visited both schools, and she felt that they had very little in common aside from being in the SEC.

Yes she was at both and took tours and loved both of them. What were your daughters thoughts on both? It’s interesting how everyone can have different perspectives

My daughter enrolled at Alabama and did not apply to Ole Miss. Generally speaking, our Alabama tour was very personalized while our Ole Miss tour was not. Additionally, for engineers, there were not any cohort programs at Ole Miss. Also, Ole Miss felt extremely southern while Alabama has over 50% of students from OOS. The honors colleges/programs were structured very differently. The campus layouts were extremely different. Ole Miss was just not the right fit for my daughter. What did your daughter think of the two schools?

We absolutely loved downtown Oxford, and The Grove was beautiful. Also, I loved the Mustard Seed, a store in Oxford.

Not related to these two but this is so important. So many say I’d go x school only if Honors. They assume Honors is better.

Honors are different. My kids applied to some but not all.

Kids need to look deeper than saying - I really want Honors.

We just got back from touring both. My son liked Ole Miss better. Weather was awful so hard to get a great feel for both. Bama gives the impression of too big for him. Son is looking for medium size. Not too big and not too small. He liked campus setup at Ole Miss better.

That’s most important.

Has he looked at Ms State ? Auburn ?

Ole Miss isn’t small but smaller than Bama. Arkansas if likes being attached to a city with a b school really bounding upward

Or was it these two as finalists?

If so, wishing a wonderful four years at Ole Miss.

Hotty Toddy

Found them during search for merit. Wanted him to look at some of the bigger schools due to merit and the fact he is undecided on major. Not looking for additional schools.

Ole Miss COA $12k-looks like a top contender

Bama COA $20k but up for old national recognition scholarship. If he gets that plus other scholarship would basically be full ride based on how they let scholarships stack.

He really likes Charleston but with merit COA is $38k which is more than we want to pay. He would need to take out loans

UCF $23k after merit-haven’t visited campus and it’s huge but he loves Orlando

FSU - 2/15 decision might visit if he gets waiver

Maryland is $27k since we’re in state but he wants to get away.

Also applied to a few small/medium sized schools that he visited but merit only gets them to mid to upper 30k.

If you can afford the $12k, Ole Miss seems the winner then.

If he’s on campus, UCF will be too big.

FSU area wise isn’t huge so good luck. I think it’s a 32 ACT needed now for the waiver, maybe still a 31. But then it’s still in the 20s.

Being in a comfortable place does matter as he has to be there four years.

Charleston is small and urban. My daughter attends. These others are very different from there. It’s a big reach but if he’s lucky he can get a Fellows weekend invite. We are on free tuition plus. It is a tough school to match environmentally. UTC has some similarities.

Glad he liked Ole Miss and that you were able to get to both.

Has your daughter made a decision?

She chose BAMA. Honors college, and they have an accelerated MBA that started this year. She got a good sized scholarship that will help pay for her masters so that did it for her ! Plus it’s a bit closer to us (not that much) but a few hours can always help

Congrats on Bama. Awesome b school. My son went for a different major.

Just a note - an MBA from undergrad is not wise (in general). MBAs have two major advantages I believe. Maybe more.

  1. A career pivot if you don’t like what you’re doing.

  2. Salary. Look at a school like Arizona State. MBA salaries are more than double undergrad. Undergrad salaries are $56k vs $146k mba ( the mba does seem to include a sign on bonus).

High ranked Indiana $76k, $141k.

If you go straight through (no work experience), at my old company you got $5k more than undergrad and while it was ten years ago they were assessing was even that too much. Any top (and by that I mean top 50 or 75 b school) requires at least two years work experience. Those without have less likelihood to add to the classroom.

The scholarship is great for some grad study but I personally think it’s a huge mistake to use on a business degree.

It could cost you in multiple ways later.

Good luck to your student. And congrats on picking a final school amongst two great choices.

Congratulations and no one should second guess or cast doubt on a personal and seemingly well thought out decision. Best of luck!!

My daughter has so many credits that she is going in as a 2nd year. So her four year scholarship will apply for her fourth year as an accelerated mba student if she gets into the program. My husband has an MBA and we are both in the business sector and are well aware of what it does for you. Thanks for your opinions, but that all does not apply to my daughter.
