Which school! Ole miss VS BAMA ? My D24 having a hard time making a decision. Still
Waiting on financials but trying to narrow down.
Take your time. Visit each again. Do a deep dive online into the majors that interest her, and the opportunities each school would provide for her education. Wait on financials. Don’t feel any pressure to commit until May 1st (sometimes colleges even throw in a little extra merit right at the end.)
Only you can answer.
Bama is larger and I think nicer. Oxford, the town, is nicer. Both are within range of a big city but bham closer than Memphis ahd cheaper if you need to fly.
Ole Miss excellent for humanities and language via its Kroft Institute.
Bama strong in business, engineering, journalism and big time sports. Both big Greek life.
Maybe she’d excel at both ?
If you are TO, you don’t yet know the offers.
If they are dramatically different, maybe that will make your mind up.
I’d see if the financials make the decision for you. If they are both comfortably affordable, I’d try to re-visit both schools and then let your D choose.
You shared that she is in for Fashion Merchandising with honors and $20K at Alabama. What major did she get into at Ole Miss?
She is in At URI for fashion merch with 20k. Waiting on BAMA and ole miss competitive scholarships. Business major at both schools. Looking for opinions on towns, campus, social life, etc etc. she is coming from out of state New England. She will def do well anywhere, wanting a safe place with a hood social scene. A lot of kids feel strongly about ole miss, including her. I’m leaning towards BAMA for location.
Thanks for opinion. I agree bigger and a lot of newer buildings including business.
Oh, sorry I mis-read that.
Why is Tuscaloosa a better location than Oxford? It will have access to lower airfares most likely.
Did she apply to Arkansas - given the major, it’s superior and you have the airport there and the city is much better?
I think if you’re considering those two schools, there is enough of an on campus contrast…but just curious why you think the Bama location is better?
Also - I’m leaning towards BAMA for location - but you’re the parent…right?
They are a few hours closer driving distance (not that it’s that much closer ) and Atlanta is another airport option (if needed).
I know people take the 3 hour shuttle to Atlanta (my son’s roommate did) but you’re only going home a few times a year vs. living on campus 4 years, day after day.
And you can find affordable from both Memphis and Bham and Southwest runs the gift card sales through Sam’s and Costco and there are alternative airports.
I personally think it’s nuts to go to Atlanta from Tuscaloosa to fly home.
Technically you can go to Meridian or even Nashville too (cheap flights to BOS for example)…but I don’t see the potential of Atlanta vs. Memphis and it’s just potential - as a reason to choose one school over another.
Yes, the drive to Oxford is 1.5 hours longer - but it’s 18+ vs. 20+.
I hope your student can make the decision on the day to day merits - but however you go, best of luck.
Thanks , great advice. Yea cost is def a big factor.
What does this mean ?
What are her strong feelings about Ole Miss ?
Data point of 2: my 2 eldest girls applied to both Ole Miss and Bama as we were on a merit hunt. The eldest wanted business. We are from New England.
Both preferred Bama as it felt like a more diverse student body (at least geographically) and was much less southern in feel. We all preferred Oxford as a town, but Tuscaloosa is OK.
Thank u this is the type of feedback I’m looking for !! Hope ur girls did well and congrats
Second vote here for Arkansas. Great OOS tuition waiver called the Non-Resident New Arkansas Tuition award, where if you have a 3.6 GPA you get a tuition reduction that pays for 80% of the difference between IS and OOS. And, yes, the Walton School is ranked much higher than Bama and Ole Miss. And Fayetteville is incredible.
I mentioned it not for business - yes, Walton is good but so is Culverhouse at Bama) but for the major - @lkg4answers noted it was Fashion Merchandising and Arkansas is one of the tops - so if you are chasing OOS merit, it would likely be a better choice for taht merit. I know a grad who now works in Chicago. I’m sure Ole Miss is fine as well.
Yes, transport wise, much easier (although not a cheap airport), the campus is gorgeous and the city is super great…and growing like crazy.
As for Alabama and Ole Miss, you know your merit up front - short of the competitive. My daughter did get $4K more at Bama.
If you’re TO, then it’s different. But for all curious, for those with an test score, it’s in the two below.
Ahhh…didn’t read carefully…thought it was business. But yes, agree on all points.
Title does say business and I’m just assuming @lkg4answers info from another thread is the “sub major” but perhaps it’s changed.
Totally agree. We know many students who have completed the Fashion Merch program at Arkansas, and it’s great. Tons of opportunities.
We live in Fayetteville and it’s an amazing city.
I went to Alabama- great school and I’m a huge fan. However, I think business classes at Arkansas have an advantage. Tons of resources with so many businesses located in northwest Arkansas.
