I came across this a little late, but found it so incredibly poignant that I wanted to share. Oliver Sacks is one of my favorite writers; I really feel that I’ve gotten to know him through his work. In the op ed, he reveals that he’s been diagnosed with terminal cancer and likely has only a few months to live. His brief thoughts on dealing with this news are well worth reading. I’ve long considered him an inspiration; this short piece adds to my admiration.
Thanks for sharing - his perspective is admirable.
What a beautiful and profound essay! Thank you for posting it.
By no means, my grandmother was no Oliver Sachs, but she was told, at 89, that her kidneys were failing and she had less than 3 weeks to live. She said, “I knew I would know I was old when I was dying. I must be old then.” Initially it was shocking to hear her say it, but how I hope I can have this type of attitude when it’s my turn!
