Olympic Gold Medalist Shawn Johnson down to...

Stanford and UCLA

So let me get this right: She doesn’t have time to finish high school, so she drops out and resorts to taking “Internet courses” from a “national high school.” Yet, she’s UCLA or Stanford material?! Sounds a little shaaaaady!

(Yes, I know she’ll rack up in the “brownie points” and celeb status department)

It’s called being an Olympic Athlete…

College isn’t just about getting A’s and test scores. Sports teams need their players and they make sure they get them.

Yeah, Internet Courses and 1 EC, how could they possibly be impressed by that?

Who knows, she might have killer SAT scores.

Then again, when it comes to schools like these, academic performance doesn’t really matter when you’re a star athlete with major $$$. Although she can’t compete in the NCAAs…

You could ask the same for the football players at d1 schools

You do realize that no matter how smart other people are, she wipes them out with her ECs. She went to the OLYMPICS, so she is one of the best gymnasts in the WORLD.

Who knows, maybe she took 12 AP exams and took difficult internet classes?

“You could ask the same for the football players at d1 schools”

a) Football players at D1 schools didn’t drop out of high school. Taking “Internet courses” from a “national high school” wouldn’t make them eligible through the NCAA Clearinghouse, which have stringent requirements.

b) This is Stanford and UCLA, not John Doe State University.

c) She’s applying as a regular student, not as a prospective student-athlete.

“Although she can’t compete in the NCAAs…”

Without question, if she were named assistant coach, it would provide a HUGE recruiting advantage for the program; what prospective wouldn’t be impressed if Shawn Johnson, adorned in her Olympic medals, came to her living room and told her she wanted to be her coach?! Rival schools wouldn’t be happy about this “advantage” one bit…

She brings two things to her app in HUGE amounts, passion and dedication, which are good indicators of success.

Any school would be honored to have an Olympic gold medalist.

what?, 1 EC? (Olympics)…I say her Dancing with the Stars celebrity (#2 EC) carries some admissions weight, too :)

Might as well come to Purdue and join his fellow olympian swimmer. David Boudia. Woo.

She can waltz into any school unless the admission officer reading her app is a fan of Gilles Marini’s body of work.
Stanford sent a bunch of kids last time and none of them medaled. Shawn Johnson will medal in 2012. Enough reason to take her.

Who said she’ll get in? She wants to go to stanford, doesn’t mean she’ll get in…

right?

Stanford is notorious for letting in world-class athletes. And I for one don’t see anything wrong with that. An Olympian, in that sport? C’mon, do you have any idea how much work, time, focus and sheer guts it demands? If her scores are any decent, she DESERVES to go to the likes of UCLA and Stanford.

and who’s to say she’s stupid?

you assume that just because she takes courses out of school that she’s an idiot.

I don’t see why there is any controversy over this. Celebrities can pretty much go where they want to go to…Unless that place is Caltech, then I’m not so sure.

I could’ve sworn I saw this article on a UCLA blog months ago…

Why? because… well…

World class mathematicans aren’t in anywhere for sure… (IMOers), yet sports champions can.

hmm…

I’m a huge fan of Shawn and I’m sure she works extremely hard to be the person she is. However, I can understand why people don’t think she should be admitted to these schools. These are ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS whose main focus is to accept applicants of superior academic ability. The whole aspect of extracurriculars is second to academic talent and only became a big deal about 10 or 15 years ago. If Stanford or UCLA were gymnastics academies, then yes, let her in, but I don’t think Shawn’s proven herself enough academically to be admitted to these institutions, no matter how great her ECs are.
