Women’s gymnastics on shortly. Is this just a one day thing or have I missed the previous days?
This is the final of two days.
Oh, and being glued to the TV during this and ice skating in the Winter Olympics is probably the girliest thing I do ever.
There was some on Friday night – was on watching the kid from our HS in the steeplechase – his finish was respectable, but he didn’t make the team. Still exciting! And they had done gymnastics afterwards (I think it was Friday).
I love, love, love Winter Olympics for the Ice Dancing!!!
But really I love watching both summer and winter events…and yes, I get teary eyed with pride…damn perimenopause!
Aww I missed the first night
At least I’m seeing night two
Yes, the ‘sleeper’ from Friday is Laura (Hernandez?) Watch her tonight.
Ya, just did.m
Building the Olympic gymnastic team is like building a college class. The highest scorers will not necessarily make the team, only the top scorer. The other 4 are judgement calls by the selection committee based on what the team needs. In 12 minutes the team will be named.
This is so exciting
Lotsofquests, I told Dh the same thing.
I love Laurie Hernandez.
Congrats to the gymnasts who made the team. And it has to be tough for those gymnasts who worked their whole lives (all 16 years of it in some cases) to make the Olympics but were not able to make it. But that is a huge risk you take when its such a narrow goal.
I just read an interview with members of the 1996 team. Amy Chow narrowly made the team and was asked that night what if she hadn’t made the team. She looked at him and said “I’m going to Stanford in the fall”. Duh. She had a LIFE beyond the Olympics. (But did make the team, did win the Gold, and did delay going to Stanford to tour with the Dream Team.)
I just wish the would stop with all the constant hugging. You don’t see that in any other sport. They are athletes, not munchkins. If I was a benevolent dictator I would outlaw it.
Maybe they should do backflips to express their happiness and joy.
Speaking of Olympic trials (and tribulations), I watched “Eddie the Eagle” on my flight the other day. Hilarious & heart-warming! Do you all remember the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary? It was the same one that debuted the Jamaican bobsled team.
I enjoyed the movie so much that I had to rewatch the ending 3 times. Everyone loves an underdog.
They hug no matter what - good routine or bad routine or mediocre routine. I find it infantilizing and kind of creepy.
H commented that the gymnast all probably hate each other.
Happy for Madison Kocian. Although she looks young and is tiny, she’s 19 and all set to go to UCLA…meaning that if she hadn’t made the team, she likely would have retired from Elite and started competing in college.
This conversation makes me realize how insular the gymnastics community is from the rest of the world. Laurie Hernandez has been a dominant gymnast for years (won the Junior Elite US title just last year - this is her first year as a senior eligible for the Olympics) and I don’t think anyone who follows gymnastics would have ever called her “a sleeper” in the competition. She has been blowing the doors off for literally years.
if you want to see more routines from Laurie (and others) you can check out usagym’s youtube channel. Trials coverage is on team usa’s youtube channel.
