Yikes. Mikaela is already a half second behind after the first 15 racers. That will be tough to make up second run.
I am watching all skating on NBCSN. Anyone else or are most of you watching the regular network channel?
The young American skater Vincent Zhou skated. Only 17 years old. He did well!
@2VU0609 Jessie and my kids grew up skiing together. She really is like that – outgoing, team oriented, and positive no matter what. And she always remembers to thank her wax techs in interviews (the team that toils to wax the team skis in anonymity so they can ski their fastest). She is the real deal of what Olympians should be.
She has been an amazing skier since she was a little kid. I can still remember her playing tag on skis with the little kids even when she was a teenager and competing for our state championship. Her balance is phenomenal – it may not seem like it, but that is a huge asset to a Nordic skier.
We used to go to fund raisers for her when she first started racing on World Cup. She missed out on a medal yesterday by 3 seconds – came in 5th, but the two skiers just ahead of her tied and took home the bronze. 3 top 10 finishes so far this week – rooting hard for her to win one before she goes home!
Oh… and she doesn’t dope. She could still end up with a medal eventually, since it isn’t uncommon in the endurance sports for them to eventually determine from a sample given at a previous competition that someone doped, and strip their medal and move everyone below them up. But of course it is better to get the medal at the time of the race!
Thanks for the extra insight, @intparent. I love this kind of positive story and heaven only knows we need all the positivity we can get right now! I hope things go well for her in her future races.
Heartbroken that Jansrud won’t be coming away from Korea with a gold
One of the few times he beat Svindal, and yet it wasn’t enough.
The skeleton looks even more terrifying than snowboarding.
What the heck has Johnny Weir done to his hair today?!!!
Dunno, but I’ve loved hearing their “inside baseball” scoop on everything. Although if Tara says that a skater is “selling” their program one more time I will scream.
I loved Shoma Uno in the team competition – if Nathan Chen can’t win, I’m rooting for him!
Mikaela and Chen on at the same time live. Neither was a good result.
Oh, dear. Nathan Chen was defeated by the mental pressure. But I bet we will see him back in 4 years as a much tougher skater.
Hanyu’s skating was so elegant.
Not a good day for the US athletes… snowboard cross, downhill, skating… But the Japanese skater cleared out the plushies!
Is there some significance for him with Winnie the Pooh? I know that is what they were throwing, but was not sure why…
Loved the Spanish skater’s choreography. Beautifully done!
WOW. I just saw the best 1,2,3 in men’s figure skating that I have ever seen. It was superb. I will plan to be sitting very near the TV with no distractions for the men’s long program, at least for the last group.
Usually IMHO the women are better at figure skating. This year they have a tough act to follow.
I agree, @DadTwoGirls. I think the women are the least interesting group skating this year. I’d put ice dance after the men, then pairs, then the women in terms of what I am enjoying watching the most.
I also thought the team competition was a lot of fun – a nice addition starting in 2014. It was great to see skaters rooting for the other athletes from the same country. And to see some of the big names step up and participate (like Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue from Canada).
And if anyone is bored… go read the internet speculation on whether Scott and Tessa are an item off the ice.
Apparently he used to have a Winnie the Pooh tissue box good luck thing and it become a “thing”. The Olympics wouldn’t allow him to officially use Pooh but the fans still throw them. The stuffies are given to a charity.
He should hold one in the Kiss & Cry.
I so dislike the time difference … I keep trying to stay awake to watch all of skating, but I can’t help falling asleep before the best competitors skate.
