Olympus cameras?

We have an Olympus Stylus 1030 camera we like very much. It’s incredibly strong, takes good pictures, and is basically waterproof. I say basically because the seals are a little corroded now, and though it’s fine for kayaking where it may get wet, I’m not sure I’d use it for serious underwater pictures at this point. So, we’re thinking of buying the newest version (we could definitely use two, as H and I presently share this one.)

The big "however’ is that I know that Olympus has been in serious trouble as a business, so I was wondering if anyone has some information/insight on this–is it wise to buy from Olympus right now? Are they in danger of going out of business? (we’re under some time pressure as we have a relative going on a snorkeling trip next month whom we’d lend it to if we decide to buy.)

Thanks in advance for any and all advice!

Hi, we use our Olympus Tough camera all the time. It is a great camera. Olympus was more in regulatory trouble, not really in financial trouble. I believe they have made amends.

My first digital camera was an Olympus C2020. 2 megapixel, sensitive to low light, took a great picture.

Both wife and daughter had newer Olympus cameras and HATE them. Eventually replaced them with Canons that are far superior.

I believe Olympus once made a great digital camera, but maybe not so anymore

I tend to agree - I use a Nikon DSLR but was a big fan of Olympus and even had a couple of their cameras, but they’re ‘strange’ these days. I would not even buy a Nikon point and shoot at this time, either Canon (I did) or Panasonic. Panny does have a ‘tough’ line of cameras I believe ([Amazon.com: Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3 12.1 MP Rugged/Waterproof Digital Camera with 4.6x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7-Inch LCD (Silver): Explore similar items](http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMC-TS3-Waterproof-Stabilized-2-7-Inch/sim/B004KKZ0J2/2)) and Canon has some pretty good ones as well…

I would not worry about Olumpus going under or being chopped to pieces (likely). Life span of P&S cameras is pretty short.

It’s funny turbo–

I replaced my Olympus c2020 with a Nikon point and shoot and love it. It takes a great picture and has a 7x optical zoom. There are some Nikon P&S cameras, however, that get pretty poor reviews on amazon.com

Thanks all. there’s no waterproof like Olympus’s, which I need, so it’s mostly on whether they’re still valid or not. Thanks collegemom for that information.

Just had to add that I too was once an Olympus lover–all my cameras had been great. but my current one has turned me into a Sony cybershot lover instead. Don’t know what happened to the quality they once had.
