OMG...gained 8 pounds!!!

I’m a freshman and I go out on weekends and drink, I don’t eat like I did at home, and I’m feeling soooo defeated! Any suggestions from someone who went through this and what you did? Thanks!!

Get a gym membership. Beer has A LOT of calories and can easily sneak up on you if you aren’t watchful. Also, if you are taking the “Loop” to your classes, try to skip it and walk.

Do you have a sport that you played in high school and can pick up again? If not, get over to Rec Hall and hit the track; anyone can run. (Start by alternating running and walking; you can find a plan online. Runners’ World has many resources for beginning runners.) Buy yourself a cheap Timex with a lap timer; the positive feedback you’ll get as your lap times go down will be very encouraging. You can also start by doing something like racewalking wherever you are over break; you should be walking fast enough that you break a sweat. Keep a diary of your workouts. Don’t keep high calorie snack foods around your room; pick up a bag of apples and maybe some low oil microwave popcorn. Walk everywhere and always take the stairs. The new year is a perfect time to develop some healhy good habits, before the stresses of a new semester set in. Also, don’t buy bigger jeans or start living in sweats. Being a little uncomfortable in your clothes is a constant reminder to watch what you eat.
