He started growing out his hair senior year of high school, and graduated from college in June. Today he was gone for several hours, and when he came home he was minus about 12+ inches of hair! I was shocked, as will be his father in several hours when he comes home. We never really gave him grief about his hair, (it was the worst/most rebellious thing he did) my friends used to compliment him all the time and say they wished they had such beautiful hair, his grandmother would give him grief about it, and a long time female friend once asked him, “Don’t you want to get married?” (I guess she didn’t care for the hair.)

But today, most of it is gone. He hair is still long, almost shoulder length. His 15 year old brother looked at him and said, “You look like a woman!” (His hair is wavy.) But, the best thing is that he printed off the donation form for Locks of Love and went to the Post Office and mailed off the braid.

I don’t know what prompted him to do this today. He is starting graduate school in the fall in a new city. Perhaps the starting with a clean slate thing.
I might ask him at some casual moment.

Well, SpringfieldMom, that was a short-lived dream. He told me over dinner that he grew it out so that he could donate it to Locks of Love, and now he is going to grow it out again!

My older son also grew his hair all through college and had it in a ponytail that went way down his back. He called it his “college hair.” He cut it all off when he started seriously seeking employment in Japan. He says it’s lots easier having short hair.

Having grown up in a time when lots of college guys had long hair, I was never the least bit bothered by it. In fact, I think I felt just a wee bit sad when he cut it.

Am WISHING S1 would get his hair cut- and it’s already short/regular length.
He has beautiful thick loosely curly hair and HATES it. Wears a woolen cap after he showers to flatten it down. He should appreciate it-- you never know how long it will last! But-- if he hates it this much he should just get a crew cut or burr or whatever…

Kudos on Locks for Love – am sure it will be much appreciated by someone who needs it. I could never do it. My hair grows slowly, and even my daughter’s Little Mermaid barbie doll has a thicker ponytail than I do :(

susantm,
I was shocked when I saw him today after he had it cut. It was way down his back, very wavy and full and he very rarely wore it in a ponytail. We called him the “Lion King.”
My husband thinks that the very long hair “mars” S’s overall appearance. Perhaps I need to take an aging photo out of my wallet from the early '70’s and show it to H and ask him to look at his hair at that time.

How about facial hair? The guys in the freshman dorm decided to try to grow beards. Some were sort of thin and they soon shaved. But my son kept his for the past two years…ewww! I was hoping he’d get tired of it and shave!

Until I read you saying your S intends to regrow the hair I was going to tell you that when students enter grad school its pretty common for them to try to “reinvent” their image.
D also moved to a new city and began grad school two years ago.Shes quite young looking and in order to maintain a more professional apppearance in the classroom, and not getting confused with the undergrads while TA’ing shes gradually upgraded her wardrobe, makeup, etc over the past two years.Just this past week, for her birthday, her boyfriend bought her a great g case for her laptop, textbooks, etc that she carries everyday. No more purple backpack…the last vestige of undergrad days!!

lkf725, my sons (ages 20 and 24) are frustrated that they still cannot grow more than a little stubble on their chins–enough that they have to shave, but not enough to grow even a goatee. Poor kids got the northern European genes in the family, I guess. ( or whichever genes don’t grow facial hair…)

If only I was so lucky Susantm! Mine unfortunately could grow one and had decided that it makes him look older and more mature. Sigh…maybe some nice girl will ask him to shave it off! LOL!
