OMGOMG what to choose???

i was at a friend’s house yesterday and we were on his computer. He said he had to go to the bathroom, so I wanted to see what kind of documents were on his computer. I came upon the essays he sent to UNC. When I just skimmed through them, I found out that THEY WERE ALL BS!!! He’s like my best friend and I know almost everything important he does. And according to his essay, he’s the leader of his church’s youth band. (He doesn’t even go to church :P) Somehow, the essay was very good and it is very believable.

Should I notify UNC about this? I want to go to UNC, but since only like 3 people are selected from our school, taking him off the competition would be good. But then what about the importance of friendship?

My motto through life has been and still is “survival of the fittest, only the strong survive.”

what should you do if you were me?

I’m no ethicist, but I am a mom. I’m mindful of the saying I taught my children that goes something like “one finger points outward, and four fingers backward”. So please use caution here, for a myriad of reasons, one of which is your manner of discovery as well as your “friendship”.

There is an active thread on ethics and college here which you may find helpful:

Best wishes to you both.

Are you kidding me?!?!?!?! You invaded your friend’s privacy and you are asking us whether you should turn him in? Wow. I’m speechless.

***bagery is frowned upon by most people in this world, and I believe your friend would be one of them. To be honest it is none of your business what he put down, and using this invasion of his privacy to advance yourself, well, see my comment on ***bagery.

Tough situation (although you put yourself in this position in the first place).

I’d talk to your best friend and be honest about how you saw his essays. Own up to the fact that you invaded his privacy and that, while you regret it, you don’t think it was ethical of him to lie to get into UNC. Then, he’ll probably be furious with you, but you could then encourage him to “come clean” with UNC and do the right thing. Whether or not he actually does this is up to him, but at least you’re addressing the issue, assuming responsibility for your actions, and trying to rectify the situation.

no offense but what you did was wrong and an invasion of privacy

let an adrep judge your friend, if he’s not meant to go there then he’s not meant to go

Giverherwingsmom, I admire your calm, but pointed, response. Spoken like only a mother could. I wish I could do the same…

Tarheelwannabe…

A “friend” gives a friend the benefit of the doubt.

A “friend” never violates a friend’s trust.

A “friend” watches a friend’s back.

Do the right thing…ask your friend to forgive you.

Leave your friend’s junk alone-both you and he will end up better up in the long run for it.

I just came upon it when I was trying to find and play Minesweeper.

And I wasn’t going to snitch to UNC anywaysss.

but still, I wished this was a fair game, don’t you guys?

I think that it’s just not fair that he could lie his way into UNC. However, maybe his ability to write so well just might make him a good candidate. So if you want to turn him in, you have a couple of ideas to think about:
Loyalty to your friend OR honesty?
Respecting your friend’s privacy OR bringing about justice?
Getting your friend into UNC OR getting yourself into UNC?
Friendship OR college?
Awkward, tense friendship OR guilty feeling about getting accepted to UNC?

Or you could avoid the UNC conflict by going to Duke, TarHeelWannabe XD
GO BLUE DEVILS!!

“…so I wanted to see what kind of documents were on his computer” is very different than “I just came upon it when I was trying to find and play Minesweeper”.

I smell some back-pedaling going on here…

I’m sorry, don’t you mean “d00k”?

whatever, im not snitching…i don’t think its worth it
