Hi,

DS1 is in ChemEngr planning to apply for med school. It’s difficult to attempt to graduate in ChemEngr in 4 years alone, much to squeeze in the premed requirements (several extra classes). Even with quite a few AP credits, he will need to attend summer school every summer. That doesn’t leave any time for all the “other” premed things he’s supposed to do like getting some type of lab-work experience and some type of medical volunteering. He is a FishCamp counselor this summer, so that’s good volunteer hours, but nothing at all medical.

He was talking about a friend who knew someone who knew someone and she ended up with a job in a lab. For those of use with OUT those kinds of contacts how can he find a part-time job (even volunteer) doing something remotely related to the medical field at TAMU in the fall? There is a premed society and he attended 3-4 meetings in the fall, but nothing like this was discussed. In the spring he had a conflict and didn’t attend any meetings.

Another idea would be a group trip to a foreign country where the kids help medical personnel perform community service type work.

If anyone has any suggestions please share them!
