On-line course or in person course to improve ACT score?

D got a 24 on the ACT, not so good (her siblings ranged from 22 on the first try to 30 on the first try). Her current GPA (junior) is 3.5

She is applying to Rutgers Camden Nursing. 2016 average acceptance criteria was ACT scores ranging 23-27 and GPA of 3.6-4.0

First is it worth the prep? Class would be about $800 – I do know my other kids benefitted from the prep. The one that got the 22 ended up with a 27 in the end. Rutgers Camden does not publish their exact scholarship amounts but perhaps the prep $ would even out in the end AND help make sure she gets admitted??

There is an in person class very close to us 3x a week (Princeton Review)-- she doesn’t drive yet so I want to make this not too difficult… or there is an on-line option by Prep Expert.

Experience with these?

I think it depends on the kid and the weakness. Some kids may need in-person to help them to stay focus, but some can do online…Given she got 24, there is a lot of areas for improvement…if you can afford the $800, I suggest to give her prep, but she needs to want to do it herself.

She does want to do it, but I am trying to assess if it is really necessary for where she is intending to study nursing. She is our 5th kid and the till is running low LOL

I doubt anyone will be able to tell you except the admin at Rutgers. You can ask them for their cut off for scholarship as well.

Thanks - we are going to an information session specific to the nursing program next week and will definitely ask some questions.

If she is motivated, she can self study. let her know her ACT is at the bottom end of the range. Is there any info on retention rates for the nursing students on the low end of the range? The point might be that she might not even be accepted with her stats, let alone get a scholarship (this IS a BSN direct entry, right? ) There is online prep for about $50, and a plethora of books, as above, at 24 her room for improvement is really significant. She Is a junior? Does your school system not offer any cheaper courses? Your local university? Here they are about $200 vs $$$ for private prep. Ask the counselling office at her school too, my kids schools has help for kids at the lower end of the range (the average is 21). What are her friends doing?

We are very SAT focused here, and she took SAT prep at school. We haven’t gotten that score yet. I am not sure she will self study and go to high school well. This is direct entry BSN correct. She knows her ACT is not great. I showed her.

Maybe she will do better on the SAT then. How long before the results are out? I would wait that out. Assuming she is a junior. As she has had SAT prep she might well have a better score. Then maybe see where she is stronger and re focus. Her PSAT should have given her a ballpark.

Nope she didn’t! 1090 - go the score today ugh. Her older sister did the school SAT prep and did about the same and then scored 30 on the ACT first time. Perhaps the school course isn’t that great.
