Does anyone has suggestions on what to do if someone is posting derogatory or misleading comments to my daughters YouTube highlight videos? We have been using YouTube to host her highlight videos and sending the coaches she has been corresponding with the links for the last year and a half with no problems. The videos were listed as public. We did not know that there were other settings until now.

This past weekend someone using a newly created userid started posting comments. The comments are not vulgar or obscene. They are full of half truths and twisted facts. They are definitely meant to hurt to my daughter.

We dont to cause a flame war with this person but we want to do something about the situation.

You need to immediately log in to youtube and change the settings. When you log in, select the video and select “info and settings”. Under the “basic info” tab you will see “privacy settings”, change the status to “Unlisted”. This means only people you send the link to can view it. This is great because then coaches can easily view it but no one else will find it on youtube. The added benefit is you will be able to track the number of times it was viewed and know it was all coaches. Next, go to “advanced settings” tab and under “comments and responses” unselect all the boxes.

If you take these steps, unwanted viewers should not be able to find the videos, and even if they were able to, they would not be able to comment.

Thanks squidge!

We found the Unlisted setting and fixed that. We did not know about the comment settings.

Do you think we should delete the comments? Right now the videos are set to private so they can’t be viewed but we would like to change them to unlisted.

I would delete all comments.
You can then send the links directly to coaches…that way only those with the links can find the video…be sure that her name does not appear as the title etc. so it can’t be searched etc…

if you are trying to get your D some exposure why are you posting to U-tube? I would think for a recruit they should be going directly to the coaches and no one else, posting to that site you just set yourself up for all the commentors(haters), all the competitors and anybody else who might want to gather a competitive edge (i.e. theysee the comments and think if she is talking to this coach and I am better than her, than hell I should be sending my stuff to that same coach) etc… Having just come off the recruit trail, off a very competitive recruit trail you to eliminate all comments and communicate with coaches directly–anything else is something that gives away your competitive advantage.

Fogfog – Thanks, I figured that getting rid of the comments would be the way to go. For titles what do you suggest if you don’t use her name? That is what we told to do by several people.

We are using YouTube as a hosting site not as a way to get exposure. She is doing that by emailing, calling, and meeting with the coaches. 95% of the coaches have asked for a YouTube link and not a DVD. We send them the links. They watch them and email their comments back to my daughter. I can’t image a coach posting comments on YouTube. The problem is we did not know about the Privacy settings or the comment settings. They have now all been changed.

Since the settings have been changed I am wondering if we should re-upload the videos that have the comments in order to get a new link.

Would guess as long as the video of her can’t be search through google for example–then leaving her name makes sense. If however the privacey of the link will be an issue, then maybe consider renaming.
Know that our student’s team often films competiton and the coach will send the link to the team–for review. Its private and can only be seen with the link and it isn’t named by the team–it often has a crazy name completely random. I don’t know why. Maybe google search her name, and also under google images and see what comes up.
I think using youtube is fine and makes sense as you can upload and secure the links–and only a coach with the link will see it.

Schoolhouse, coaches WANT a link to youtube - just about everyone we dealt with asked for it -and youtube makes it very easy to keep it private/unlisted for just coaches, as well as the ability to turn off comments. It’s the perfect tool and coaches much prefer this to you sending them DVDs or some huge video file.

Tpmcinty - the other thing we did was create a website - did it for $29 thru google (hosting for a year). The site was very easy to create, looked really professional and created a central place to update academic info, athletic accomplishments, schedule, any other info, as well as a link to all videos (which were all hosted unlisted on youtube). Worked great and we had many coaches comment on how much they like the idea. Our website was also unlisted, meaning you had to have the web address to find it.
