If that’s real, where do I buy stock?

The idea of programmable ink is far more terrifying to me than an actual tattoo. There’s just no way that that seems safe.

romani, scroll down - That article was an April Fool’s joke! But there are, in fact, lots of unanswered questions about the health and safety implications of tattoo ink:

[Think Before You Ink: Are Tattoos Safe?](Think Before You Ink: Tattoo Safety | FDA)

Ooh, I didn’t scroll down far enough. But I still think it’s coming, eventually.

Haha- I know it’s not real. That’s why I said the idea of it! :)

Why do you think it is terrifying?

I already mentioned somewhere in this thread that there were some companies that looked into “tattoo” biosensors. If you search the USPTO database of patent applications, there are quite a few ideas out there. A bunch of sensor particles that give out readable signals when they come in contact with analytes such as O2, glucose, etc. is embedded into the skin like a “tattoo”.

I also notced that the number of patent applications dealing with ink tattoo removal is growing rapidly. :)

Just the idea of something programmable in my body terrifies me. I can’t really put my finger on why…

You already have a lot of “programmable” things (things that react to an external stimulus) in your body courtesy of Mother Nature. :)

I meant artificial… -.-

Artificial? You mean like a cardiac pace maker? Or an insulin pump? Or an implant to time-release a drug over an extended period?

The future is already here. You just need to get used to the idea of it.

These things are WAY different than a programmable tattoo. These things are necessary for a better quality of life (or life at all).

I am studying bioethics. Trust me, I’m very used to the idea. Doesn’t mean I have to want unnecessary programs or any extra artificial technology in my body that I don’t have to have.

It’s a source of amusement to me in general that the same subcultures who tend to be all granola-y and organic and green and health-conscious also tend to have a high propensity for tattoos. Uh, like there is anything “natural” or "healthy"about injecting dye into your skin.

^^that’s not true where I live. The health-food people may have a small, discreet Sanskrit character somewhere but they’re certainly not covered in ink in any noticeable fashion.

Tattoos are ornamentation and people approach it differently. It struck me while visiting Seattle about 20 years ago. I saw young people with tattoos, but they tended to be very small and simple - like just a triangle or something on their ankle, whereas on the east coast tattoos were larger and more intricate. Similarly, people dressed more plainly and women wore much less makeup and jewelry than I saw on the east coast. I wonder how true that all is today.

greenwitch, in 20 years since your visit Seattleites’ tattoos became bigger and more elaborate. Clothes are still very plain, and I really don’t know who bought all of that Dior makeup and D&G perfume I needed to buy for my girls for Christmas. :)

So…Golden Globes tonight…and Angelina Jolie had THE MOST fabulous dress and body…just elegant/regal/awesome…and then I spot the tattoos on her arm and back. Talk about ruining the perfect canvas…

She’s just kindly reminding you of her wicked past - vials of blood around her neck and all that. We’d forget, if it weren’t for those tattoos.

ICK, the tattoos do look pretty distracting to me. The dress itself is very dramatic & would have looked great sans tattoos. Looks like my D who writes notes to herself when she wants to remember something, but D’s notes wash off easily.

I was intrigued, and looked for pics. She has many, and has had many removed or covered.
