<p>Oh, only six months ago, there was “Red Dawn” which elicited roughly the same anti-Asian “patriotic” response.</p>
<p>Clearly Hollywood’s message is that in America, it’s American as apple pie to “kill all the ****ing Asians”.</p>
<p>And of course all these tweets are one sided, god forbid the article post some comments that favored the movie or from people that aren’t as sensitive. Leave it to the media to stir up unrest and make racism an issue out of inconsequential things.</p>
<p>Because the fact that the movie portrayed no Asians in a favourable light (in fact, the main Asian character is seen strangling a white woman) is “inconsequential”. It’s nice of you to speak from a class-privileged position :)</p>
<p>Funny because I’m asian and none of my other asian friends give a **** about this movie or what Hollywood does. It’s movie for crying out loud; it’s sad how offended some people get over fictional works and the decisions/opinions of a few people, and then you get the media hyping it up as ‘racist.’</p>
<p>Hollywood is not responsible for the tweets. Also it seems you are generalizing about Hollywood. I am sure there are some studios that do not portray Asians only as evil.</p>
<p>The Russians have Anna Karenina and War and Peace. Do Americans know “Diary of a Madman”, “Shanghai, 1936”, “Love in a Fallen City” or “The Field of Life and Death”? (American films have been made about the above-named Russian works… no American films for the above Chinese works, despite being of equivalent literary merit.) And no one tweets “let’s get a gun and kill all the Russians” after seeing Red October, for instance. </p>
<p>While the Russians have Leo Tolstoy and Tchaikovsky, no one in America knows about the cultural accomplishments of 20th century Chinese writers Lu Xun, Bing Xin, Xiao Hong, Eileen Chang or Ding Ling. (They are on the same level as Tolstoy). In fact, most Americans in this forum probably couldn’t name a gifted 20th century Chinese writer who wrote pre-Cultural Revolution. (Most people will think Amy Tan, who is about as comparable to Tolstoy as T.A.T.U are to Tchaivkosky.) Americans know Gorbachev but not Zhao Ziyang; the February Revolution but not the May Fourth Movement.</p>
<p>Plus, most Russian Americans are fairly well-respected in society. They are seen as cool people to party with (in contrast to Asians, who are still seen as uncool). In New York City, Russian Americans use the prestigious 4,5,6 lines. Most Asians use the not so prestigious 7 line. (You can tell prestige and social power by the amount of air conditioning each line receives – 6 receives most, 7 receives least.)</p>
<p>Sigh… This might come as a shock, but racist people exist. I prefer not to give them attention. And I’ll let you know if I ever see a single positive depiction of my heritage. </p>

<p>Your argument is just plain silly. There is nothing stopping Asians from riding on any subway or living in any area of NYC. In fact, the same Long Island Railroad that services the rich ares of Great Neck, Manhassett, etc. also service Flushing.</p>
<p>This was a dopey action film pitched to an audience of young males. It should hardly be surprising that a handful of morons from that contingent made ignorant comments. Lots of ethnic groups have been portrayed negatively in the arts over the years–remember the outrage that surrounded The Sopranos?–but those portrayals have little or nothing to do with how those groups are actually viewed by society as a whole or how they prosper in this country. Must we get up in arms about a new cause every five minutes?</p>
<p>Funny you chose to compare those works to arguably the greatest and most important novels in history. Maybe those Chinese works have equal literary merit as War and Peace, but somehow I think they would have garnered much more attention if it does.</p>

<p>Eh, big Hollywood blockbusters always stereotype their enemies into being the most evil, despicable humans ever so the Americans can play the hero. That’s nothing new–I mean, they do that to the Russians in Cold War movies, and the British in Revolutionary war movies, and etc. </p>
<p>I don’t think the makers of the movie were being knowingly racist, so much as they were making their villains super-evil, as they always do, and the villains were unfortunately an ethnic group. It’s unfortunate that some people are racist, and chose to make racial slurs against Asians. </p>
