As I understand it, you have to be on campus sophomore summer. But, after that, can you change your mind on which quarter you will be “off-campus?”

I mean, if you had told your advisor that you wanted to be off-campus junior winter, but then something came up junior fall and you wanted to take a spring internship off-campus instead, can you do that? What does it mean in terms of switching dorm rooms and such?

Easy to change with Registrar, but, depending on when you make the change, you may be subject to a housing cancellation fee. Now, in the example you give: The deadline for making a change for Spring 2010 is not until sometime winter term, so that’s not a problem if you decide in the fall that you want to take spring term off.
But this might be something to watch out for: if you make the change late, the Office of Residential Life (who’s assuming your room will be vacant winter term) may or may not have assigned your room to someone returning from a fall “off” term. In this situation, I don’t know whether you would have to apply specially to stay in your room. You probably should check with ORL to see what’s involved.

In other words, changing your D-plan is easy, but there are several departments that need to know about it besides the Registrar, e.g. the Office of Residential Life, Student Financial Services, Financial Aid (if applicable), and your major department (e.g. your major card/course plan will have to be modified). I suspect that eventually the information filters from the Registrar’s Office, but you might want to touch base directly with other administrative areas, just to make sure everything’s in order.

Thanks for this! I still am unclear though about something - do many juniors or even freshman take summer class IN ADDITION to the required sophomore summer? Someone at the registrar’s office answered my email by saying “summer is for sophomores only” - does that mean that you can’t take summer class after freshman or junior year? The D-plan worksheet on the Dartmouth website makes it look like you can…I’m confused…
