I’ve not seen this specific problem addressed so here goes.
To preface, I was seen on campus at a showcase, invited to another camp, given a written evaluation by the HC along with the offer to get a pre-read. I’m backwards…ACT 33 but GPA 3.4 uw. Failed an online class sophomore year that I should never have taken as I didn’t need it and didn’t have retake. Not a core class. I have plenty of units to graduate.
Anyway, HC expressed that the transcript may not be viewed high enough by admissions. This is a top 10 school. I applied ED anyway as this is the school I want. Told HC and sent a copy of my application to HC who has been a little non-responsive but asked for fall schedule which I sent. I’m dual enrolled and this semester currently carrying all As in 6 classes. When I asked about him supporting me through admissions,HC says he’s not sure any of the sports have much pull with admissions this year but sees me contributing my freshman year.
Then I don’t hear from him again. I don’t think it’s my baseball skills holding me back. Any coach mind readers out there?
Top ten school where the coach says he doesn’t think any sport has much pull with admissions. So I guess we’re talking about UChi, MIT or Caltech. Athlete or not, you’re probably going to need a pretty stellar transcript. Did you get any feedback on the pre-read?
Sounds like even if your stats were all tops, the coach doesn’t have any influence in admissions. It is what it is. You can apply without extra help (as you did), or you can look at other schools which you can still do for ED2 or RD. If you don’t think your chances of ED admissions with a 3.4 are high, keep looking.
If you are asking if this coach is interested in you, it sounds like he is IF you can get admitted on your own.
Thanks for the replies. I never heard anything out of the pre read and never even did another overnight with other recruits since I went ahead and applied ED. That bugs me a little as does the story changing from “I’ll be able to support some guys through admissions” to " we don’t think our support is going to matter much this year". HC said I’d be okay as long as I fit the profile of admitted applicants from last year. What? I guess I’m just antsy over the whole deal. Where’s the “recruited to play” part in all this? Or is he just not interested? If he’s not interested, why would he say I’d make a fine addition to the program? I guess I expected things to be really black and white. But it’s very gray. I understand he wants me “if I get in on my own”. I guess I screwed up not going with the schools who would have actually supported me. Who knows.
Look, I would reach out to a couple of the other coaches at this time. be honest-“you aren’t my top choice, but if it doesn’t work out can you support me thru ED2?” Doesn’t hurt to try if you haven’t burned all your bridges.
For other prospies, this is why you thank the coaches and stay in touch even if the school is not your top choice til you have the acceptance letter in your hand. You don’t have to lie, but thanking the coach for the interest and telling them you’ll keep them in mind if top choice doesn’t work out is a good idea.
It sounds like HC has withdrawn any support he might have been willing to give you earlier–the line about support not mattering may or may not be a smokescreen. Anyway, it sounds like if you get in, it will be without the athletic boost, and if the coach didn’t even want to put the transcript through a pre-read, he may be foreseeing a negative response from admissions. Or he’s just found a recruit he likes better; unfortunately you don’t really know why he cooled off.
I’d imagine some schools might be more willing than others to overlook the one failed, online class (particularly since it was online–those classes are often trouble for otherwise great students) I agree with Oldbatesie; since the ED2 application deadline is after the ED1 admit, reaching out to some other coaches in case your admit falls through is a sound plan. I’d say something more along the lines of, “I’ve applied to X school ED1, but think I may not get in because of ______________________” Then tell them specifically why you’d love to apply to their school/program ED2 if the ED1 decision is negative, but that you think you’d need some coach support, and see what they say.
Yeah I got denied. 33 ACT not good enough after all was said and done. Going after the merit money at a more local school who will be happy to have me. Forget D3 baseball.
Sorry to hear that. The 33 was good enough, 33 is good enough for an athlete at any school in the country. (The GPA may not have been enough, though).
Although the real problem was it sounds like the coach didn’t give any support. At some point, he decided to no longer support you. That’s why you never heard anything out of the pre-read. He probably never had it done. Either because he decided to stop recruiting you as a player, or thought the academics would not fly.
My son had a very similar situation with one of the Ivies. He got a little further than you did, in that the pre-read was done and came back positive. But then after that, he began hearing the same kind of “not sure how much pull I’m going to be able to get for an additional spot on the team this year.”
We read the tea leaves and did not apply ED there.

Happened to me with Colorado College my original top choice. Coach was interested in me and I would have been his top recruit, a lack of pull in admissions paired with 1 bad semester did it in for me. Luckily I got offered a spot at a higher rated school and better athletically ranked school. Now I am nervous about my transcript, I redid the course this semester and held a 3.85-3.9 with 9 courses honors and ap(uw). I have the coaches full support at this school and an 1800 sat, I will post my results as it seems I’m in a similar boat.
