One Book, One CC

I posted this idea earlier today, received some positive feedback, and was encouraged to start a new thread:

I think it would be fun to have a single CC summer book selection in the parent cafe—a thread that would allow us to discuss one book in depth, rather than list dozens of worthwhile titles. Same concept as “One Book, One Chicago.” When I finish a book, I’m usually dying to discuss it with someone, but I don’t have time for a “real life” book club.

Any takers? Any suggestions on how to pick a title? I’m open to just about anything of reasonable length (no Infinite Jest or War and Peace:))

Should it be college related?

Like
I am Charlotte Simmons (Tom Wolfe)
or
The Secret History (Donna Tarttt)
or
Tam Lin (Pamela Dean) college + fantasy

Sounds like a fun idea to me.

Looking forward to it. I’m currently reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Very good.

I am game, someone pick a book. Just make sure I can pick it up at Barnes & Nobels. (youngest D gets a discount ;))

Picking the book should be interesting …

Has anyone read “Still Alice” yet?

Of course, the above wouldn’t really apply in this case. We all know that discussions on CC never get heated and lengthy. ;)

So far, the suggestions are:

I am Charlotte Simmons (Tom Wolfe)
The Secret History (Donna Tarttt)
Tam Lin (Pamela Dean)
Still Alice (Lisa Genova)

Let’s keep the floor open for a few more suggestions, and then we’ll vote by a show of hands. :)

I feel illiterate. I like Tom Wolfe so I vote for “I am Charlotte Simmons”.

A friend is reading this for her book club, but I haven’t read it and don’t know too much about it.
300 plus readers average rating 5 stars.

The Help … Kathryn Stockett

How about Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay?

Would love to do this - however I have read “I am Charlotte Simmons” and would vote no on that particular book.

Because you have read it already? I would be willing to reread it. BTW, Tom Wolfe’s new book Back to Blood seems to have been put off until 2012.

My suggestions were more of a thought about direction than suggestions. I don’t really want to read Wolfe either, or re-read the other two!

I just finished the memoir, “Mean Little deaf Queer,” by performance artist Terry Galloway, which I loved, and would enjoy discussing with someone.

I also just finished Malcolm Gladwell’s “Outliers,” which I would love to discuss.

I’d prefer to discuss and read something non college related.

I might be in, but I have a silly rule - I reserve summer for light, beach reading so I don’t do read anything I have to think too hard with in the summer…so depending on what you decide, I might be in.

I will also say that something not too long or a fairly easy read might be good for the first choice - that way people can actually finish reading and join in without having to wait too long…

Count me in. I don’t have any suggestions, but I’d like to join the discussion.

Updated list of nominees:

I am Charlotte Simmons (Tom Wolfe)
The Secret History (Donna Tarttt)
Tam Lin (Pamela Dean)
Still Alice (Lisa Genova)
The Help (Kathryn Stockett)
Sarah’s Key (Tatiana de Rosnay)
Mean Little deaf Queer (Terry Galloway)
Outliers (Malcolm Gladwell)

For the frugal voters among you (and you know who you are ;)), The Help and Mean Little deaf Queer appear to be only available in hardcover.

The Empty Nest by Karen Stabiner: 31 short pieces about the title subject-kids leaving home and how parents handle it. Maybe too close to home for us, but excellent writing and possibly something for everyone. Also makes a good gift for parents of graduating high school seniors.

Perhaps not the most amazing piece of literature, but the Kite Runner (book > movie by 900 million) brought me to tears. Amazing story. Amazing novel.
