One course determines if I can get into UCSD..

I have one course from Oregon State University called BIO 102 and it is 4 units based off from a quarter system. This is the course description; Mendelian genetics, molecular genetics, human genetics, genetic engineering, evolution, and behavior. An introductory course in the principles and methods of biology, intended for majors in fields other than the biological sciences. Lec/lab.

Now…according to assist.org, BIOL 107 is transferable to UCSD and it is a 4 unit course based by a semester system. The course is an examination of living organisms and their environment. The lecture and laboratory are intended for students planning on taking more advanced courses in the Life Sciences, or students majoring in Education, Child Development, Physiological Psychology or related areas. Topics that are emphasized in this course include the fundamental chemical and physical processes common to all living organisms, the interactions between organisms and their environment, classical and molecular genetics, metabolism, plant and animal anatomy and physiology, animal behavior, evolution, cellular and molecular biology, and the experimental and cognitive processes used to examine these fields.

I know that these two courses seem very similar but I wanted your opinion on this. UCSD won’t evaluate and tell me whether this my previous course is transferable and now I’m pulling my hair and waiting…

I’m hoping that this course won’t be tranferable since the conversion from quarter to semester units of OSU’s BIO 102 is around 2.66 and Mesa’s BIOL 107 is 4 units.

I don’t know how UCSD will evaluate this but maybe one of you guys had a similar experience.

Hope anyone could help me. Thanks.

Yeah, same thing happened to me. UCSD and all the UCs and public schools are all like this: we applicants (and students) ae all only numbers to them. I learned to not count on achieving quality with the UCs.
A private university, on the other hand, would actually take the time to evaluate your BIO 102 beforehand. But anyway, honestly I can tell you that UCSD will probably count it as transferable if it is very similar. I previously attended a 4-year too last year before I applied to UCSD and they counted the following courses from my 4-year: Health Care Ethics, Freshman Writing Seminar, Biology 101, Chemistry 101. But I could only find this out on the phone in April 2010, AFTER they rejected me.

This is why I’m fed up with the UCs – they just do not care about the individual because you’re not worth their time. Nevertheless I’m re-applying for next term, haha.

(Did you know they reuse the same acceptance letters/rejection letters year after year?)

oh gosh…this bio course I took at OSU is pretty much the only course they would take since my other courses are only 3 quarter units. I talked to the transfer center at UCSD and they pretty much said that they will only transfer 4 quarter units and up only if the courses are similar. So the other 5 courses with B+'s and A’s won’t be contributing to my overall GPA.

I’m just hoping that I could get an analysis from staff tomorrow.
I heard from my counselor that I could get a course evaluation from UCSD by talking to one of the course evaluators in Mesa.

Ahh…thats unfortunate that the 3-quarter B+s and As wont count. At least luckily your BIO102 course from Oregon State University is 4 units and countable.

Your talk with the transfer center – was it over the phone, or did you go in person to UCSD?

Is Mesa the name of the city, or is it something else? I need some course evaluations too, and was wondering how I could do this too.

Hey it’s Oliver_Twist! I thought you got into UCSD last year? Looks like you and I are in the same boat this year again?

Ye, UCSD are big blue meanies that didn’t recognize Twist’s unique snowflake qualities and just considered him another flake.

Yeah, they weren’t blown away by all my snow I brought em, they just scraped it right off.

I just went to UCSD’s Triton Center and asked them directly to evaluate my courses. A lady in San Diego Mesa College specifically said that they would do this if I come in person. Well I wasted my time and they told me that the only thing I can do is wait.

When I first applied to CCC, the course evaluators from Mesa specifically told me that the BIO 102 won’t be UC transferable. Now I’m waiting for April and feel like I have just given up school…

I just don’t understand why Mesa is giving me misleading information. Are they to blame? I don’t know. I’m blowing off right now and I feel that it’s unfair for one course to determine my eligibility to enter UCSD. I practically wasted 2 years moving down to San Diego. Now I’m going to stay for another year while I get my Pharmacy Tech degree.

I just don’t know who to trust anymore. Mesa’s words are lies and never plan to ask them for anything.

I feel for you Oliver_Twist. It was completely unfair that they didn’t consider your exceptional circumstances but all UCSD (and probably most other UCs) care about are the numbers.

Also shakya, it seems that the person you talked to had no idea *** was going on, and that you were one of the unlucky ones that Mesa screwed over. Honestly, I don’t understand why they employ all these idiots anyways.

I guess I will have to wait for my letter. I’m going to prepare for the worst…so I’ll start pharmacy tech school and take O Chem then get into UCSD.

Still mad about this…

hey guys, I know a way to get into UCSD. I’m just going to take a 8 week course for the second half of the semester. I calculated my GPA in the worst conditions and it’s above the TAG requirement.

Thanks all.
