One day D-III football clinics -- worth it?

S2 is looking at fairly selective and academically challenging D-III schools (mainly UAA/ NECAC) where he could play football. Realizes he isn’t likely to be recruited, but hopes interest and intent will be a tip. Is a full IB diploma student with 12 APs by graduation and test scores that put him at 75+%tile at all of his schools.

D1 is definitely not on the table; he is looking at a couple of D-IIs for academics, and figures he’d walk-on there and see what happens.

He has been getting mail from schools he is considering, asking him to attend their one-day clinics. Are these worth the time and expense to attend? He’d like to go, but one day here and one day there add up to lots of plane tickets. He is already planning to go to a four-day program at a school where he’s not considering applying, but that has a good skills camp.

If a kid wants to attend a specific school along with the hope to play ball, having any opportunity to get in front of the coach is probably a good one. Most of these schools pick their “recruits” to apply early decision. If your son has no intention of applying early decision and will walk on regardless than I am not sure how valuable it would be to go.

Son applied to one DI school with no intention of playing but really wanted to attend that particular school. he knew he would be passing up many recruiting opportunities because of that decision. However, following that ED rejection, he and his coach contacted many of the schools that he would be applying to (many in the Nescac group). Almost every single one of them said that their picks and slots had been filled except if he wanted to apply EDII (at one or two). However, most also said after seeing his film that they’d love to have him play if he got in. When he did get in to every single one of them on his own merits (which made him feel great by the way), the coaches at a few called him right away to gauge his interest and some were very convincing at his attending their school.

I am convinced had he intended to be recruited, he could have had a much stronger position during the fall. However, for him (and us) it was about the college education because in football you can get hurt tomorrow. But as it turned out, he will not only play football but also play lacrosse… something he’d never be able to do DI. I think he is really looking forward to a great freshman year.

Some of these one day camps put your name out to many schools. For example Dartmouth has a camp that assembles well over 10 program coaches. With all these coaches looking at you, if your first choice doesn’t come through then you have the oppurtunity of 2 other coaches calling you.

“he is looking at a couple of D-IIs for academics, and figures he’d walk-on there and see what happens.”

Just out of curiosity, if he is looking at UAA and NESCAC schools, what DII schools could even come close for academics (except possibly Bentley)?

Oops, sorry EMM – no D-IIs on his list. There are two I-AAs (not in NESCAC or UAA), but knows he’d be a walk-on there.
