ONE EC THAT I'M REALLY INVOLVED IN

I participate in speech and debate. I’m the president of my school’s team, and I am ranked number 1 in the nation in my event. I have won more than 40 awards at competitions over the years. I and very involved in this activity. I was wondering how much weight this would hold in the admissions process.

You’ve gotten some solid answers in your “Chance me” post. Your academics are your first discriminator – they will outweigh your EC. Many on your list aren’t realistic. cf. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/20108595/#Comment_20108595

Can you retake either ACT or SAT? Also, can you afford those schools? Many will be ~$60K per year

Good luck .

Your one activity (though I see on your chance thread that you have many) is not going to matter at your reach schools, once your grades and test scores are considered. At the schools where your grades and test scores are above average though, it will make you a strong candidate.

In reference to your one (many, actually) activity, it’s too late now, but if you had been set on getting into the tippy top colleges on your list, you would have prirotized grades and test scores above your ECs. I am writing this for the benefit of other readers. ECs don’t get you into college.

Depends what the scale of your involvement is (Being on Team USA is very different than winning TOC in Policy which is very different that winning NCFL or being a top point getter in in an interp). Can you specify a little bit? The tough part is that schools like Georgetown will get (and reject) tons of applications from students that are both top notch debaters and have the stats to back it up, so you’d have to prove why you’re a better pick.

I’m ranked first on NSDA website in Oratory. I got third at NCFL, semi finaled at nats and have numerous other final round placings and championships.
