one-time 2009 scholarship applied to 2010?

Does anyone have experience with getting a one-time 2009 scholarship applied to 2010? DS asked the scholarship donor if they would defer payment until his sophomore year, and they said they couldn’t do that. They suggested he ask the university to apply the money to next year instead of this year. Anyone have luck doing this?

I know if you have a positive amount in the tuition account at the end of the year the school will carry it over. I can’t see why that wouldn’t happen with this money as well.

Hmmm . . . another way to approach this dilemma. The only hitch might be that his u is going to set him up to receive any overage as a direct deposit to his bank account, and he already has an overage. Any more funds he receives is simply going to chew into the free money his is already receiving. Next year is going to be different, and he could really use this last scholarship then.

Here’s another hitch: The donor is going to send the money directly to DS as soon as he send them his schedule. The u will not be contacted by the donor. His u wants him to report any scholarships he receives. Should he report this one or just keep it to himself? (Un)fortunately, we are very honest folks, so I can’t really see keeping this scholarship from the u, but it is tempting . . . .

Don’t keep the scholarship from the school…in accepting financial aid from the school I’m sure you agreed to notify them about any outside scholarships received. Not telling them could indeed jeopardize that financial aid.

Realize that its possible he cannot even cash the check…many scholarship checks are written out to both the student AND the school, and the student signs the check and turns it in to the FA office for actual ‘cashing’.
