one year down

By this Friday, I will have finished my first year at UChicago.

My classes were great. I went to many lectures given by professors and scholars from around the world. I read a few of the Great Books. I learned a lot.

After participating in class discussion or going to lectures or reading Aristotle, I wanted nothing more than to go back to my house lounge or table and discuss the great questions raised by such an education. A year ago, I would’ve expected to encounter a welcoming & enthusiastic community at UofC that would want to do the exact same. I cannot believe how wrong I was.

Instead I entered a community full of very smart people that don’t like to exercise their intelligence much. I cannot determine the reasons for this–maybe they get enough intellectual stimulation from class or they lack interest. During fall quarter there was more frequent discussion and debate that often lasted until the early morning hours. That’s what I wanted from college. I was severely disappointed at the infrequent nature of debates. This might be the fault of my house and the people I’m around, but I have the sinking feeling that this issue is not isolated in my house of just under 100 people.

Does anyone else share my concerns and experiences? Have you managed to remedy the issue with certain RSOs or other involvement? I am desperate for more stimulation and engagement here…

Under 100 students? Were you in Breck?

I’m so jealous of you… >.<
