I am currently an undergraduate student at UCI and one of the counselors told me it would be beneficial to take the class DNA to Organisms on the website Coursera. I am not really fond on online classes and would rather not take one but, the class would benefit me if I do. I just want to know what would happen if I fail a class on Coursera? Does it affect my academic GPA in college? Can I drop the class whenever I want or would that affect me negatively in my academic GPA?

I am really confused and would appreciate if someone could help me out.

Coursera will have no impact on your academic GPA and you’re not taking it for credit. Your counselor probably just told you that because UCI offers an online sort of preparation for biology class. It’s meant to prepare you for college biology courses, and there’s no penalty for taking it or not taking it. It’s purely for your benefit.

You can enroll in it if you want. You can do all of the things you need to pass it if you want, or you can just watch a couple of lectures and see if it’s helpful for you. You can drop the class at any time. It doesn’t matter.

I would highly suggest learning about Coursera on its website as they answer most of your questions. Unless you’re paying to take the signature for-credit version of the course, there’s no requirement to complete the course and you can quit the course at any time without penalty.

It’s a good idea to learn how to succeed in online courses as a lot of continuing education courses are done online and many on-campus courses require the use of online resources.
