Hi guys! I am from India and I have an online interview in 5 days. I son’t the first thing bout interviews :(. Somebody please help me!!!

Through something like Skype or just AIM or ICQ?

Through Skype.

don’t be nervous, neethu. Chicago is known for their insanely awesome AND casual interviews. so be genuine and let your interviewer know how passionate you are about their school. for any school, i’ve found interviewers to be THE BIGGEST cheerleaders for their school, so show them that you feel the same way. be confident and, as cheesy as it sounds, BE YOURSELF. that’s who the interviewers want to see, and i’m sure they can tell if you’re frontin’. good luck!

Really?? The only interview I have even read about is the one that comes in the book Opal Mehta
so you can see how pathetic my knowledge of interviews is. Can you temme, what I need to know, as in, what kind of questions I will be asked, what kinda questions I can ask etc…??

What do you like to do for fun?
What extra-curriculars are you passionate about?
What are some of your favorite classes?
What are some books that you love (in and out of class)?
What do you really love about UChicago? In what ways would the school fit you?
What’s your academic area of interest?

And then some questions will just be about you. Your character. The point of the interview is for the interviewer to enable admissions to turn your flat application, of essays and class lists, into a more 3-D human being. So, let your personality shine.

And then your interviewer will ask if you have any questions for him/her. I suggest preparing a few questions for your interviewer, even if they’re just “What was your favorite class?” or “What did you think of Scav?” Ask anything you really want to know the answer to. This is an opportunity for you to find out more, too. Make sure you DO know about the school going into your interview. My interviewer told me that sometimes people will go into their UChicago interview knowing absolutely nothing about the school aside from it’s rank and rigor.

Okay. I am starting to get an idea. I just wish my adrenal glands would get the idea too I am sweating big time. Are there any Do’s and Don’t’s???

I practiced with my dad, because i, too, tend to get stupid nervous. It helps to get me into the groove. And remember its juuuuuust a conversation. If I get through that nervous bit beforehand, I’m fine. Besides, a little adrenaline never hurt anyone. It’ll keep you sharp Plus, I’m sure they expect you to be at least a little nervous.

As someone else on CC said, be prepared to think outside the box. Mind didn’t, but some interviewers ask super odd questions. This is UChicago we’re talking about. But don’t be afraid to take a second to think about your answer.

Don’t throw your SAT scores or GPA at them unless they ask. This is about the OTHER parts of you.

“Interviews are not required for admission into the College. However, we encourage you to have one so that you can learn more about the University of Chicago and we can get to know you better; the interview is both informative and evaluative. The interview is meant to be a conversation, not a grill session, so come with questions and be ready to talk about yourself. Each of the two options described below is treated equally in the selection process.”

Take the opportunity to clear up any gray area. You failed sophomore English because you’re teacher only spoke Mandarin Chinese. Okay. Maybe that’s an absurd example. But feel free to tell them the things that you are dying to have them know, but maybe aren’t clear on your app.

Although this is not true for all other schools, UChicago interviews can’t hurt you, they can only help you. So, you’ll be fine. I know you will.

On a side note, where in India are you from?

Thank you so much Aurora
You really helped!!

And just be calm. And if it is IM style them make sur that you don’t use text talk. At least not tooo much.
Good Luck!

Thank you soo much guys! :)

First of all, don’t read a plaigarized book (Opal Mehta).
Secondly, Chicago’s interviewers should be pretty chill in general, but some might ask “Why Chicago?” as the first question, which just causes unnecessary stress for people not expecting it. My interviewer did that, and I was pretty much mumbling nonsense…
Maybe it’s because I get so nervous, I haven’t had a lot of interviewing experience. I always go for the “Yes, and…” principle, which is basically, if the interviewer asks you what activities you do, say what you do, and add what you learned, how you got started, etc. etc. even if they don’t ask. It’ll cut down awkward pauses a lot, too.
Also I need to work on buzzwords. I say “like” and “right?” too much. Must stop.

Yes. The Uh, ummmm, like line of inbetweens is bad. Try not to even say one of them once if can help it.

DX I always say “so”, and “he/she was like”, and trail my sentences with “right?”, a kind of natural extension of my uptalking tendencies when I’m nervous. It’s really frustrating b/c it’s hard to get rid of them at the worst of times.

Uh oh! I am in trouble now. I tend to do that a LOT when I’m nervous, and nervous I am cos this is my first interview. :(
