Online Lecture

My calc 151 professor is horrible. I have access to online lectures provided by the university, in which another calc 151professor has recorded their class. The online professor is much more clear and effective at teaching me the material, plus i can pause and rewind the lecture. SO…
-is going to my actual lecture pointless since i learn much more via the online lecture?

My son said he doesn’t always got to lecture especially when the prof is poor and if he has an excellent TA. However, I think it’d be wise to attend until you see how exams and grading go. Exams may or may not line up with online lectures. Also, sometimes instructors get testy when lectures are poorly attended and they find a way to penalize absentees.

I guess that is my biggest beef regarding osu.

My son had Econ and calc classes last year where he could not understand the lectures at all because of poor english. Lectures were a complete waste of time. And speaking as a parent—a complete waste of money.

What is the motivation to hire professors that cannot communicate and teach?

Does osu totally discount communication skills when hiring foreign speaking professors?

To be fair, DS has never complained that he can’t understand a foreign-born instructor.
We live in a global society and it is helpful to get used to accents. Anyway, I think OSU picks instructors largely based on their professional credentials and research although I am sure they need to be reasonably comprehensible.

I’m not talking accents here.

Half the class stopped attending. He recorded it for me. You couldn’t understand.

If there’s a recorded lecture that was incomprehensible, it should be taken to the head of the department or college dean if necessary. I would not let my kid fail a class if that was the case.

He recorded a lecture for my benefit

ohiopublic- Perhaps you or your son should bring it to the attention of the department head or dean regardless. It should certainly have come up directly with the instructor via the student evaluations (SEI). Hopefully adjustments can be made.
