Only 4 schools? Should she add more? [CA resident, 3.79 GPA (3.85/4.15/4.15 for UC, 3.97 for CPSLO), 1240 SAT, <$60k, prefer <$41k; admitted to NAU with WUE price]

My S23 just applied to some UCs and CSUs plus Utah, Arizona and ASU. Apart from his UC PIQs, none of the others required any essays at all (if you aren’t applying for the honors college).

Utah and Nevada Reno would come in under budget with WUE and are safeties, with very simple applications. Utah’s deadline for WUE is Dec 1. I agree with others that you could throw in a couple more CSUs with no extra work.

Do you have any recommendations for reaches based on her stats and budget?

Why does she need a reach? You need a safety and you have one - not a reach.

Unless you have need, budget will be a problem for a “reach” - but you don’t need a reach.

If she likes Gonzaga, you can look at Portland, Santa Clara, and LMU - but again, will they get to cost.

What you need is the right fit, not a reach.

There’s many smaller schools, solid schools, like Willamette, that are safeties. A reach would be USC - but that’s not what she’s looking for, etc.

We are from the northeast of the US and therefore I do not know the smaller schools in California or the southwest particularly well.

The first thing that comes to mind are the various California State Universities, such as San Jose State. The other thing that comes to mind is to check the WUE school finder, since you are from a WUE state.

Hopefully others will have better knowledge of schools in and near California.
