** I have recieved a few academic awards and certificates, although I don’t know how prestigious they really are?

** School doesn’t rank, but I have one of the higher GPA’s

** I have not taken any SAT’s yet but I did get a 191 on the PSATs, which I know is very low but I did not study for the test at all, and also had never taken any sort of test like it. Since, I have been studying rigorously for the SAT’s which I will take next year. MY score will definitely improve from the PSAT- SAT predicted score of 1910.

** I’m not sure what I’d like to major in, both Biology and History intrest me, as does the prospect of teaching.

** I am Hispanic, not sure if this helps my chances?

So, assuming all goes well (Straight A’s, 5’s on all AP Exams, successful EC involvement, raised SAT Score) what are my chances?

Thank you!!

Your transcript looks great! Your URM status will give you a pretty substantial boost in admissions but with your stats, I believe that you don’t need AA to help you!

If the academic awards are from your school, then they have no value…No need to mention them on college apps.

You should try the ACT. Some people do better on it - I did! If you prefer the SAT, then study and retake it, but remember that your application will be looked at holistically. I believe that adcoms really want to see students with personality and passion; conveyed through essays, recs and ECs. This goes farther than SAT scores.

None of your ECs stand out to me, and it seems that they aren’t consistent. I suggest that you read Cal Newport’s new book titled “How to Become a High School Superstar”. It will change the way you look at extra curriculars. It’s all about leading a relaxed and happy life in high school while standing out in admissions.

You said that biology, history and teaching interest you. Awesome! You could do an independent study on a historical or biological topic. You could do research at a biology lab. You could volunteer at a historical museum. You could tutor children who are having trouble reading. Be creative and remember that ECs are supposed to be things that you ENJOY doing. If an EC becomes a chore, STOP!

Best of luck to you!

Wow, that is pretty impressive. I think you’ll be a serious candidate for those schools.
Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/974360-chance-uc-colleges-special-case.html#post1065374697

Yes. It did.

Being Hispanic definitely helps, although with your grades, think of it as an extra boost. Keep doing what you’re doing, and do your best on the SAT.

Villanova – in
Duke – high match/tiny rech
UNC – in-state or out of state? Match when in, reach when out due to a funky situation they have about percentages of OOS students…
Wake Forest – match/safety
