I thought I had all kinds of canned pumpkin and now I don’t. I’m cooking some butternut squash and hoping that will work for pumpkin pecan pie. Any tips?

make sure you cook the moisture off–squash puts out more wet.
I would add 1/2 cup more sugar and also a quarter more spice. Use brown sugar not white.
Actually, cannot give you any real advice, just as a seasoned cook would do.
If all else fail go to you local store and buy one or even something else.
Make really dark brownies and no one will complain.

Thanks–I did add extra sugar and spices. I’m sure it will be good.

Don’t tell them it’s not pumpkin until AFTER they’ve complimented you on your pumpkin pie.

I made pumpkin chocolate chip muffins with butternut squash instead of pumpkin. They are delicious.

I’ve read before that a lot of canned pumpkin is actually butternut squash.

Just grab a pumpkin off someone’s doorstep … just kidding :)

Baking the squash to keep it on the dry side helps. I ALWAYS use butternut squash for the better flavor, and heard that much of the canned stuff is squash regardless.

Just substitute some canned yams/sweet potatoes for pumpkin. Sweet potato pie and pumpkin pie taste about the same to me.

Then you haven’t had good sweet potato pie, Lizard! Sweet potato pie doesn’t have the spices pumpkin pie has. Good sweet potato pie is pure amazing sweet goodness. I like pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving, but sweet potato pie is awesome always.

Well, thanks. I think the pie will be good. Bad pie is probably an idea that doesn’t…

Pie is always good. Enjoy!

If you were bethiepa I’d help you out. I think I must have picked up a can of pumpkin every time I went to the store this past month.

Well, the pie was yummy with squash. I thought I had pumpkin because the evaporated milk can had a picture of pumpkin pie on it. I mean really.

Glad the pie came out well. The thread reminded me about my law school son who was sent to the store last Thanksgiving eve. He called me very confused about an item on the list, canned pumpkin. He asked how do you put a pumpkin in the can, I kid you not!

One of my cousins went grocery shopping for us once and Mom had put tom on the list for tomato and he came home with a tom turkey.

Glad it turned out! Love the grocery stories
