[Oops! Vt. school’s No. 5 rank a mistake - Yahoo! News](http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/odd_school_ranking_error)

I live in Vermont and this is certainly in the news here today. When that ranking came out (which frankly is based on such few criteria to really mean very much to me as to what makes a quality high school), I was honestly shocked to see Montpelier High School as number 5. Who knew? Nothing against the school but it just didn’t seem possible. While it is a good school, it isn’t even necessarily touted as Vermont’s best, let alone nationally.

I have to really give the principal at MHS a lot of credit. He and others saw the error and brought it to the superintendent and they brought it to USNews’ attention. I always wondered about the claim that 100% of the students took AP exams. That was impossible at any school in Vermont which has a spectrum of socio-economic students and many who do not even go onto college at all (at our HS, only 66% go onto college). The number of graduates was also far off the mark. The school is still in the top 500, but still, such a public error that brought a community some elation to have to be taken back is pretty poor. Kudos to the administration at MHS for being ethical and bringing the error to USNews’ attention.
