OOS Accepted LSA/Questions about Ross/LSA Honors/Scholarships

My daughter applied to Ross OOS and was accepted to LSA. She did not receive an invite letter to apply to LSA Honors, which I believe some people received. She is interested in Ross, so perhaps there wasn’t much of a point to this. She was not invited to apply to Shipman (which we didn’t even know about). She is Chicago north suburban, 32 ACT 4.45 weighted, 3.9 unweighted.

I have been told that there is 0 chance of any OOS aid in her situation by other parents in our area. Our EFC is 34000 (our instate Bus major is 35000). We haven’t visited Michigan due to weather and weekend EC obligations. Is there really any point? I say no and we should decline. Counselor says stick it out to the bitter end to find out about Ross, Financial Aid. Any insight from the knowledgeable here?

Have had several general invitation to accept/visit letters from Michigan but nothing else since being accepted. She has been accepted to Illinois Business Honors and Indiana Kelley Direct Admit and Hutton Honors with 11,000 scholarship. Waiting for Penn Regular Decision (Russian Roulette, I know). Accepted with scholarships to MN and MSU as backup but will probably decline those.

Might as well wait to hear from Ross, but I agree that scholarships are unlikely in your daughter’s case.

It does not hurt to wait to hear from the FA office and Ross. Nevertheless, your D’s stat is just slightly above admission average, so it is not likely to have merit scholarship, at least not those that may affect your decision.

Many, if not most, of the scholarships are automatic at the University, including Shipman. In other words, you don’t apply to them–they select you.

The only thing you can do is wait. Hopefully everything turns out for your daughter! If not, she still has good, affordable choices.

^ There are some scholarships depending on your submitted profile. Also other scholarships from external source that require applications. Some may notify you the availability, some you need to find out yourself. For instance, Bell is one of the big one that you need to apply but it is too late to apply now.

Thanks for the info…we hadn’t heard anything about extra scholarships such as Bell. I imagine that Michigan accepts OOS students gambling that they will be able to come up with the $$ on their own. My beef is primarily with the high school counselor that encouraged her to apply and get her hopes up. We are perfectly happy for her to attend Illinois or Indiana, but as our whole family has attended Illinois, she wanted to be different!

For any school, in state or oos, it is the student’s responsibility to look for scholarship opportunities. Many schools make it easier by automatically including it with the admission application. Even with that, there are many more other sources that are from external but managed by the university. Some of those may be listed on the college’s website. UMich does have such a list for external scholarships:
http://www.lsa.umich.edu/students/scholarships/externalscholarshipopportunities</a>
There are also scholarship indexes online or available in the library. I found several on one of those books that my D is eligible to apply. There may be also some local foundation to provide scholarships. One should not just rely on the school to provide the need, particularly for oos students whose needs are usually not met.

Agreed. She has applied for a number of merit scholarships, and I know she has printed out another set she intends to apply for but unfortunately they will not be awarded before the May 1 deadline. There is quite a lot of aid in our district for underrepresented ethnic groups, sports team captains, and 1st generation students regardless of income, but only a few in the open category. She has found some county-wide scholarships to apply for that are not restricted, but this is off the topic. Thanks for the link.

I agree that it is hard to make the decision before receiving all the scholarships and FA information. Unfortunately, some of the scholarships will not be announced before May 1. Even worse, there are other factors such as housing and residential programs that may force the student to make decision earlier than the May 1 deadline. My D is kind of decided but I told her to wait a little bit longer until we find out the net costs for each school if possible.
