what are the general admission minimums for OOS applicants,
What are good SATI/SATII/ACT scores, good UC GPA, and do they even look at class rank?

I am looking at chemE for major if that makes a difference.

The good news about ChemE is that it’s one of the few majors that’s “non-impacted”. So it’s a little less competitive for admission.

Selecting “All applicants”, “All Admits” for Fall 2007 at Berkeley and looking at “Highest SAT (Avg. of Math and CR)” and “High School GPA (weighted by honors)”…these are the admit percentages:

4.20 and above:
500-599: 46%
600-699: 57%
700-800: 76%

4.00 - 4.19:
500-599: 22%
600-699: 25%
700-800: 44%

3.80 - 3.99:
500-599: 8%
600-699: 7%
700-800: 18%

As an OOS student, you probably need to have the higher range of these stats to get admitted.

ChemE will look at your math score more closely.

Tom,

I read some of your prior posts asking about ChemE. I see that you’re in Illinois and plan on applying to UIUC and Cornell.

Regarding the engineering rankings in USNews, I would say they are accurate but in no way are there huge differences between the schools in terms of what the rankings may seem to imply. Engineering is not like law school…engineering is a very “democratic” major, meaning you’ll get similar pay, job opportunities, and grad school opportunities no matter what school you go to…all of the top 30-50 schools listed on the USNWR engineering ranking will be very similar.

With what I said above in mind, it behooves you to save money and go to the school that would be cheaper for you. I imagine Berkeley, since you’re OOS, would be a lot more expensive than UIUC. You can apply and see what kind of financial aid you receive, but Berkeley is not generous with financial aid to OOS applicants.
