Solid chances. Your class rank is great. How competitive is your high school? 1170 SAT is below average but still within the range of last year’s accepted class. One other thing that Ohio State looks for is first generation college students. If you would be the first in your family to ultimately graduate from a four-year university, make sure that the admissions office is made aware. You’d also add geographic and ethnic diversity to the class. Overall, I think Ohio State would be very interested in your application.

My parents and my grandparents didn’t go to college so me and my brother are the first generation of our family to attend college. When I saw my counselor a month ago, I asked her about the competitiveness of my high school. According to her, she said we are a competitive public school because the school offers AP classes even though theres still the problem with some AP classes not offered due to low interest this year. Students have a choice of enrolling in IB at another school if they please but I decided not to do so because of the immense intensity of the classes I heard from the IB coordinators.

These are the primary factors that Ohio State is going to look at:

Class Rank: top 5% with AP classes at a competitive public school (great)
SAT: 1170 (slightly below the average but still within the range for the '07 class)
First Generation College Student
Hispanic

I think you have a great shot at getting in as well as some aid for being 1st generation and/or Hispanic. Definitely contact Ohio State and apply.

One thing is that Ohio State does have rolling admissions, so I’m not sure you want to wait until you receive your December SAT scores unless you’re absolutely certain that you’ll substantially raise your score. This is something that should definitely discuss with admission in the near future.

I plan on sending my application the first day of december so that I can be considered for more scholarships. I also will apply for the Morrill Scholars Program to help me pay for OSU if I get the scholarship. I am also interested in Honors at OSU, but I’m not sure if my december scores will be considered for the program so I don’t know if I should send my scores to them.

I agree with sh60614, do not wait. Get your application in ASAP.

If you don’t raise your test scores enough in December (and you’ll need to raise them quite a bit) to get a pre-enrollment offer to Honors & Scholars, don’t let it get you down. You are still able to earn your way in freshman year through classroom performance.

Good luck. I hope Ohio State works out for you.

Oh, I didn’t know that I can get into honors by doing well my freshmen year as well. That’s a relief to hear thanks sh60614!

Please don’t plan on sending your application the first day of December… that’s cutting it too close.

Our computer crashed 3 days before my D’s application was due at another school. eek.

Agree with not waiting to send your application in. You have a lot going for you that Ohio State will be very interested in, and your SAT scores are not so low as to preclude admission.

Question: Why would you pay OOS tuition at tOSU, when you have guaranteed admission to UT-Austin, as a Texas resident in top 10% of class? Also, UT-Austin engineering > tOSU.

Are you looking to get out of Texas?

I’m going to apply to UT Austin as a safety. I find more value in leaving out of state to live in a new community that consists of a variety of new things. I also feel that Ohio would be a more friendlier place than Texas overall and also the football at OSU is great!

Also a bunch of people from my school want to go to UT-Austin so it feels like UT-Austin is the place for ALL Texas students, but I don’t want to go to a college where everyone else is going. In other words, I want to take the road less traveled by.

It’s not that UT-Austin isn’t good, I love to be at either school but I’ll go to OSU if I can afford it at the end. Otherwise, I’ll go to UT.
