(OOS) How the heck was I accepted over these others?

So i’m just curious, I see people with near perfect SAT’s and gpa’s and long EC lists who are IN STATE getting deferred, while I (2070 SAT, 3.6 GPA, very weak essay, and very limited EC’s) am accepted. I don’t know of any hooks other than that I said I don’t plan on applying for Financial Aid if that’d matter. Also have very strong letters of recommendation. I am on the math team and I got 2nd and 3rd place in a big state competition junior and senior year. That’s pretty much it… so did I just get lucky? did they press the wrong button? lol

GL to all those deferred

Michigan is need blind, so they won’t consider your financial condition in admissions.

There could be several reasons why you were accepted. Perhaps you are from an underrepresented state, or maybe admissions really took a liking to your essays and recommendations. You never mentioned your course rigor, so it might be that they were impressed with the difficulty of classes. Maybe your high placing in the state competition helped more than you thought. If your high school has the reputation for very strict grading, admissions may have found the 3.6 a much more respectable GPA. There are just too many potential reasons to list. Since every application is given a holistic review, it is totally possible to be accepted with a below average GPA and SAT.
