OOS Transfer

I will only be a freshman at UW-Seattle this fall but I’m looking to transfer to UCB in junior year. I know it’s quite early but I figure I should start researching now if I want the slightest chance of getting in. I have a few questions:

-What are UCB prereqs for ChemE?
-Are extracurricular activities/volunteer work/internships important when they review our applications? If yes, what kind of extracurricular activities/volunteer work/internships look good on the application?
-Are UW courses transferrable to UCB?
-UCB requires studies in American History while UW doesn’t, do I have to take that class while at UW?
-Is the foreign language requirement waived for intl students whose native language is not language?

That is all. Looking forward to your responses. Please help me :(

^This lists UC Berkeley’s chem engineering pre-reqs. Since you’re coming from out of state, some of this information won’t apply to you, though. You’ll need to confer with a UCB representative to see which courses transfer, if possible.

Extracurriculars are important. Anything from volunteering to community service to school club participation is good. Extracurriculars related to your major are best, though. Try to get into/start your own engineering club or perhaps secure a research position with an engineering firm or engineering professor from your school. That’ll help a lot, especially since UC Berkeley doesn’t accept many out of state students.

Again, check with a UCB representative to see what courses will articulate to that school.

I don’t think Berkeley requires American History classes for admission, but you’ll have to complete them before graduating from Berkeley, if admitted. It’d be prudent to complete them as soon as possible, especially since UCB normally gives students just 4 semesters to complete upper-division coursework if they’ve transferred to the school.

No. You need to complete a foreign language class and it can’t be in a language that you’re a native speaker of.

Good luck.

Thank you very much! I go to an intl in my home country meaning I studied in another language (French) than the one they normally teach at a “normal” high school. Does that help?

You can’t use French for foreign language credit in that case. The University of California is explicit about that. If you’ve completed coursework in another language, you should be fine.

Wait, I’m not 100% sure. He seems to be implying he’s at one of those French schools in a country whose language is not French. If his native-speaking language is something else he should be able to take the french language exam for credit, correct? If not, that seems like a flaw, as it is a second language learned.

Not sure. This foreign language credit stuff can be confusing at times.

Agree, it is not clear…
